Description
Extraordinary Meiji inro of a fox wedding in the woods(Kitsune no yomeiri), with the outside case decorated as the woods, and the inside decorated with the ceremony.
Length: 4"
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a similar one without the outer case of the woods, otherwise slightly different in design but very similar in style, execution and appearance. I am guessing that it is the same artist.
If you want to see the Metropolitan Museum example of their fox wedding inro, try putting the four words:fox wedding, icon and Metropolitan into a search engine like google and you should see the Museum version.
This lot includes the original receipt paid by the family in 1975 to Ashkenazie & Co, of 6500.00 for this item. The description on the handwritten receipt is as follows:
1.Lacquer Inro of Gold Shealth holding four cases of Black lacquer-the theme of foxes wedding -unsigned 19th century.
Davids notes: the best inro I have ever seen in my lifetime, especially with the woods as an outer sheath. A museum piece, and probably a better example than the Metropolitan Museum version of probably the same artist, because of the outside sheath.
