Description
18k colored stone necklace, c.1975-1985, 53.8 dwts, 18" length. Marked 750 18k JL.
Davids notes: A sensational piece and a gorgeous necklace, this lot has a large number of colored stones, including amethysts, peridot, garnet, citrine; it also has numerous diamonds, including a cluster of ten diamonds halfway down the chain on the left side, some very nice round diamonds and a nice marquise diamond at the bottom. This type of necklace, sometimes referred to as a "Tutti-Fruiti" necklace for all of the colors, can be done poorly or well. This one was done well. The stones are first rate in color, cut and clarity. The 18k gold work is first rate, top quality. There are numerous points where the gold parts "hinge" so that it moves, in parts, and is not stiff.
One nice feature is all up and down the necklace, the designer put small diamonds along side the larger colored stones, as an enhancement or accent, but it gives the overall necklace a nice sparkle. The designer mark is JL, unknown to us, but we assume that it is probably one of the top NY or Brazilian jewelers that manufacture for name companies like Tiffany or H.Stern, but sometimes manufacture on their own for their own clients. My guess is the original selling price for this necklace 20 to 40 years ago was around 25,000 to 30,000.As a gemologist/jeweler, my feeling is any price between 3000.00 and 8000.00 is a bargain, and in the wholesale range.
