Description
1865 Machpelah Cemetery Randolph Tennyson Walter Scott Death Poems Scripture
“Machpelah” is a collection of inscriptions from tombs in graveyards that warn and console the living persons reading them. There are scriptural verses and explanations of the word ‘cemetery’ to help people be pointed back to the author’s hope that “every grave-stone might not only record the names of our deceased friends, but also proclaim the name of Jesus, as the only name given under heaven whereby men can be saved.”
This 1865 edition includes 312 grave-stone inscriptions for infants, young, old, and miscellaneous, as well as poems and sermonettes from various authors on death and funerals including famous people such as Tennyson, Walter Scott, Watts, Cowper, H. B. Stowe, Washington Irving, the Catacombs of Rome, and more.
