Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas, framed under protective glass. Done in the Regionalist style of Grant Wood (American, 1891-1942). Image depicts a face we all find recognizable: that of the woman in Wood's most iconic piece, "American Gothic" (1930). The lot currently being offered is likely a study for the final painting. This framed piece measures approximately 16" x 12.75"; image sight approximately 13.5" x 10.25".

Reverse side of piece features two paper labels. One attributes the piece to Grant Wood, with the title being, "Study for American Gothic". This accreditation from Ferargil of New York. The second label reads, "An exhibiton of drawings and paintings by GRANT WOOD. Ferargil. April, 1933."

Grant Wood (American, 1891-1942) was best known for his paintings depicting the American Midwest. Woods grew up in Iowa and studied art and metalworking in France. He was always an active painter, and, by the end of his life, had become synonymous with American lifestyle painters. Wood was very much a part of the Regionalist movement.
