Description
This lot consists of a graphite illustration on paper, done in the avant-garde style of Natalia Goncharova (Russian, 1881-1962). This rich image depicts a courtyard walkway, perhaps the back entrance to a Mediterranean abode. Hand inscription at bottom right reads, "Juan Les Pins. N.G. 1938." Juan-les-Pins, situated on the southern coast of France, was a popular health resort in the pre-war era. A detailed, atmospheric piece that would grace any collection. This unframed work of art measures approximately 12" x 8.25".
Natalia Goncharova (Russian, 1881-1962) was a multimedia artist and radical thinker who held an incalculable influence over the Russian avant-garde. The blending of sacred and profane imagery was a motif that Goncharova was naturally drawn to, leading to a great deal of harassment from the public. Aesthetically, Goncharova strove to adjoin Western and Eastern traditions, celebrating heritage and everyday culture.
