Hezekiah Butterworth was an American author who is best remembered for his enormous, seventeen volume work ‘Zig-Zag Journeys’. These volumes were written as travel guides and educational works from his travels in Europe, South America, and Canada. They were very popular throughout the United States, especially among young readers.



This volume, ‘Journeys in the Sunny South,’ describe Butterworth’s westward journey through the United States. It describes his ventures in Georgia, North Carolina, and the American south, as well as Caribbean islands – Cuba and Bahamas. This book even includes bits on American slavery and the famous pirates of the Caribbean!



The Zig Zag series was printed in 8 different formats over the years. This 1887 edition includes over 100 impressive illustrations!
