Ferdinand Praeger was a composer, musician, and writer best known for his controversial biography of Richard Wagner, Wagner As I Knew Him, first published in 1892 after Praeger's death. Praeger’s book was printed in controversy with Ellis and Chamberlain accusing Praeger of including fabricated letters which caused biographers Breitkopf and Hartel to withdraw the German edition from publication. However, others such as George Bernard Shaw said, "A more vivid and convincing portrait than Praeger's was never painted in words." Praeger’s exaggeration of the length and intimacy of their friendship as well as his claims around anti-Semitism caused more controversy.
