Description
[By Jodocus Hondius (Joost de Hondt)][In Purchas His Pilgrimes in Five Bookes, Book 4, 437861][Printed by William Stansby for Henrie Fetherstone, London, 1625]14.5 cm x 18.5 cm Watermarked paper. Modern color. Right edge of page appears to have been trimmed in binding, slightly cutting into the map’s lower right margin, so a strip of paper has been added. Book page headed “Chap. 18. Asia. The fourth Booke. 437.” Oriented with west at the top. It displays China as far west as Burma in Southeast Asia. Korea is shown as an island. The northern end of Luzon in the Philippines and southwestern end of Japan appear as well. The text, in English, describes animals raised for food and comments extensively on travel via inland waterways, including from Macao to Peking. The reverse is a page of text describing, among other things, the ornate ships that Mandarin magistrates travel on, the local wildlife, the use of porcelain vessels, trade in silver traded by weight, types of textiles and wood, and “a kind of Reed (the Portugals call it Bambu) almost as hard as iron.”
