Description
Three editions of Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, Alias Barmudas Dictarum, ad Ostia Mexicani Aestuary. Three engraved maps with hand-coloring, includes an edition by Blaeu, circa 1640 or later, with Dutch text on verso, 15 7/8 x 21 3/4 inches (40.5 x 53 cm), toned but a clean example; an edition by Hondius, circa 1644 or later, no text on verso,15 1/2 x 20 1/4 inches (39 x 52 cm), restorations, a few edge chips, tear to corner; and an edition by Schenk and Valk, circa 1720 or later, 15 x 19 3/4 inches (38.5 x 50 cm), spotting and old inked atlas marker in margin.
Three versions of the famous Bermuda map based on Norwood's Bermuda Company 1618 survey. The map shows the divisions of the island into the original tribes or landowners whose names are listed below the image. The title cartouche makes mention of the failed colony at Roanoke and the upper portion of the map depicts the coast line of Florida, Virginia and New England with Plymouth and Roanoke named.
