Description
1840 1st ed SLAVERY Joseph Gurney West Indies Jamaica Cuba Caribbean Henry Clay

Joseph Gurney was an early 19th-century English Quaker who wrote an extensive letter to Henry Clay in which he described his visit to the West Indies, the Leeward Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Saint Thomas, Antigua, and Dominica. Gurney spent three years on a Quaker gospel mission touring the Caribbean and North America and kept a thorough record of a winter he spent in the West Indies. This collection of letters was better known by its British edition title “Winter in the West Indies”.

This book is an excellent source on 19th-century slave trade, particularly those exported through the Caribbean islands on their way to North America.
