England, May 21, 1709. 4 7/8 x 7 1/2 in. (124 x 190 mm). This 3% enlargement loan is an early and rare partially printed Bank of England £100 stock, signed by Lord Halifax at bottom; MS. on verso recording various transactions; creasing from original folds; scattered soiling.

A fantastic early piece of financial history.

Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661-1715) was an English poet, statesman, and was responsible for reforming and modernizing most of England's systems of public finance. He established the national debt in 1693, founded the Bank of England in 1694, served as a Treasury commissioner in 1692, Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1694, and was the First Lord of the Treasury in 1697.
