[Literature] Frost, Robert

A Boy's Will

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915. First edition, second state (with "And" in last line of page 14), one of only 750 copies printed. 8vo. 63 pp. Inscribed: "Robert Frost/May 25 1916-the/news from the front continuing/indifferent to bad." on front free endpaper. Book-plate of Mary Walter Cooper on front paste-down with inscription above same-presumably in Cooper's hand-"Bought at the Allies Bazaar/June 3rd 1916." Presumably, Frost was asked to inscribe, and possibly donate, this book, as well as a copy of "North of Boston," to the Allied Bazaar, which was held a week after his dated inscriptions, to help raise funds for the war effort. Original blue cloth, stamped in gilt, boards severely spotted from damp (interior not affected); top edge trimmed, other edges untrimmed; old review of a Frost biography laid in to rear endpapers, slight offsetting from same. Crane A2.1

North of Boston

New York, Henry Holt and Company, 1915. Reprint of the First American edition (December, 1915). 8vo. 137 pp. Inscribed: "Speaking of intervention on our part now/(May 25, 1916) to end the war, see line 14 on/page 66./Robert Frost/Franconia N.H." on front free endpaper. There is a small check--presumably in Frost's hand--next to said line: "He says the best way out is always through." There is also a 3/4 in. tear in the top edge of this leaf, presumably from repeated readings of Frost's line from his direction. The inscription appears to be a continuation of the one in "A Boy's Will". Book-plate of Mary Walter Cooper on front paste-down. Original blue cloth, stamped in gilt; top edge trimmed, other edges untrimmed; very small newspaper clipping pasted on front free endpaper, far below Frost's inscription; text from front panel of dust-jacket mounted on rear paste-down. A near-fine copy. Crane A3.2.
