ZR-3 Entering Hangar First Time, Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, N.J., Oct 15-1924
1924. Sepia toned gelatin silver print. Mounted to board; scattered surface wear, tears, and soiling. 7 1/2 x 43 1/8 in. (19 x 109 cm). In frame; 8 7/8 x 44 5/8 in. (22 x 113 cm).
The USS Los Angeles (Zeppelin Rigid-3) was a rigid airship, built between 1923-24, and was the longest serving rigid airship in the history of the United States Navy, used primarily in the development of the American parasite fighter program. It was decommissioned in 1932, recommissioned a year later, and flew several missions until she was retired to the hangar pictured above. She was dismantled in 1939.
