Description
Elder Charles Simmons b. 1939 - d. 2020 15" tall traveling man stone carving by African American Artist Charles Simmons from Eden, NC. Charles Simmons worked alongside Raymond Coins.Elder Charles Simmons or "Elder Charles" as he was often called was born on April 19, 1939 to the late John Estes and Zella Simmons in Stokes County, NC. He was one of eleven children, eight sisters and three brothers.Free-spirited as a child, he enjoyed the outdoors helping the family grow gardens and crop tobacco. He began his career working at Brook Cove Stemmery and would later work for and retire from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company where he dedicated 35 years of service. After retirement, he became an avid artist, painting and carving many "folk art" pieces later displayed in The Smithsonian American Art Museum.
