The present work follows a (now lost) composition of the same title by Adriaen Jansz van Ostade (Dutch, 1610–1685), formerly reported in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm by 1659, as part of a series depicting the five human senses. The present work seems to depict Taste.
