Description
AMERICAN / BRITISH NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS, LOT OF TWO, wool or silk on linen, each with five or seven alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, comprising one wool example with lower half signed, now mostly illegible, and dated "1828" above pictorial motifs including trees, birds, a dog, and a figure, all surrounded by scrolling vine border, and one silk example with lower fourth featuring a row of initials "...[?]M. CM. JM. AM. EM." over unfinished lettering and motifs at the bottom. Each house under glass in modern frames. First half 19th century. Wool example 11 1/4" x 11 3/4" sight, 12" x 12 1/2" OA.
Wool example fair to good visual condition with several scattered losses and fading/fugitive color to wool thread, frame with wear, scratches, and a few flakes, glass with crack along left edge starting in lower corner; silk example good to very good visual condition with light toning, some scattered stains and holes to linen, some losses and fading/fugitive color to thread, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frames.
