AMERICAN, POSSIBLY AMISH, MOSAIC-TYPE PIECED AND APPLIQUE QUILT, hand-stitched, 11 graduated octagonal motif blocks in various solid and print fabrics made of over 1,000 pieces applied to a black ground, four borders of alternating black and red fabric, octagonal and grid quilting in black thread, applied green binding, three-paneled calendared brown fabric backing. Fourth quarter 19th century. 78 1/2" x 77".
Fair to good overall condition, top with scattered spots and areas of shattering having losses, some fading notably to red fabric, binding with some scattered small holes and lacking a section on one side near corner, backing with scattered holes and losses mostly small in size.
Provenance: Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
