Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, rendered in the Post-Impressionist style of Paul Cezanne (French, 1839-1906). There's an inscription painted by hand at bottom right. This dynamic still life portrays a lush, warm scene of swaying trees and clay-toned houses in the distance. A fine testament to Cezanne's adept talent. This painting would be a highlight to any art collector's gallery. Framed measurements approximately 28.25" x 23.5".
Reverse side of piece features two stamps. One reads, "12". The other, ovular stamp (at center) reads as follows:
"Exposition Universelle. 1855. Seule Medaille de 1er Classe. Pour les toiles a peindre. Meissonnier pere et fils. Toulouse. Marseille. Rue S. Forreol, 75."
The basic English translation of this stamp would be:
"Universal Exhibition. 1855. Only 1st Class Medal. For canvases to be painted. Meissonnier, Father and Son. Toulouse. Marseille. Rue S. Forreol, 75."
At bottom left corner of reverse side, an affixed paper label bears the number "162".
Paul Cezanne (French, 1839-1906) is regarded as one of the greatest contributors to the Post-Impressionist era, a herald of modernity and an influence on many later art movements, including Fauvism, Expressionism, and even Cubism. Cezanne's art grew up and out of the Impressionist era, but would come to subvert all convention and ultimately stand for unwavering integrity in the painter's craft.
