Description
This quality matted and framed conte crayon Self Portrait is by listed Chicago Artist Herbert Katzman (1923-2004) and depicts the artist staring directly over his shoulder at the viewer. It is signed in the lower right corner and dated 1965. An Expressionist artist who worked on paper, and as a painter, Mr. Katzman was known for his atmospheric style portraits and landscapes. A Pollock-Krasner, and Guggenheim Award Fellowship recipient, his works are in the permanent collections of the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hiroshima Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Washington DC. He emerged along with other Expressionist artist during the 1950's in important international shows, and also was a participant in the Venice Biennale. In later life he was represented by the Terry Dintenfass Gallery in New York City. This esteemed artist has drawn himself in blue Conte Crayon, and framed in an early 20th century giltwood frame. This important work measures 23" tall x 19" across. Also included is a book pertaining to his art career, his life and obituaries.
