Description
A pair of George II sterling silver spool salts, London 1740 by Edward Wood (first reg. 18th Aug 1722, this mark: 3rd Sep 1740) The bowls of compressed circular form, upon a tall pedestal spreading circular foot with moulded stem. Each engraved to the side with a crest of a on a mount a centaur passant regardant, girt about the loins with a garland of laurel of the first, drawing a bow and arrow. Each with a gilt interior. Each fully marked underneath. (2) Diameter – 8.6 cm / 3.4 inches Height – 5.7 cm / 2.2 inches Weight – 271 grams / 8.71 ozt The crest is probably that for Elsley or Lambert Edward Wood was apprenticed to James Roode on the 6th July 1715, free 2nd August 1722, registering his mark in the largeworkers register on the 18th Aug 1722 at Puddle-dock hill ye end of Great Carter lane. Accepted to the livery in March 1737.
