Description
Polynesia, Rennell Island, ca. 19th century CE. A large, handsome club carved from a strong, warm brown tropical hardwood, with a long body that slowly widens to a curved tip. The blade has a low, raised ridge down its length and its surface has been sanded using shark skin. Around its narrow handle is a woven Lauhala fiber guard. Clubs were prestigious items in Polynesia, used in war and carried for ceremonial purposes. This example has a unique form and great surface. Size: 4.75" W x 24" H (12.1 cm x 61 cm)

Condition
Some of the woven fiber from the top of the handle is lost and the lower half has some fraying. Otherwise light wear on surface commensurate with age and handling including some dents, dings, and chips. Rich patina with very light deposits on surface.
