Description
Major John Bigelow's first-hand account of the action on July 2nd, 1863 at Gettysburg, where he emplaced his battery in the ground between the Peach Orchard and the Round Tops, 100 yards from Barksdales 13th Mississippi assault lines. At the time he was in command of the 9th Massachusetts Light Artillery. He fought in many major engagements, including Malvern Hill, where his battery fired the last shots and he was seriously wounded (right arm shattered), he was also shot through the hand and body at Gettysburg. After recovery he took part in the Campaign of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, North Anna, Jericho's Ford, Tolopotony, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg, 13 pages, but a wealth of detail, like being forced to retreat by prolonge (dragging guns with men by rope), as all the horses had been killed. His description begins with the five-hour march from Yaneytown, Maryland on the night of the 1st-2nd. This is noted as having been taken by a reporter for the Cincinnati (Ohio) Gazette. Tightly rolled. Clean and complete.
