Pre-Columbian, Chile, San Pedro, Atacama Desert, Tiahuanaco (sometimes Tiwanaku) culture, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A finely preserved, hand-carved wooden snuff tray of a rectangular form with a shallow receptacle. On one end is a bird-shaped handle with folded wings and a protruding head bearing a tapered beak. Both the tray and bird are graced with a smooth patina that has developed over the centuries. Size: 8" L x 1.8" W (20.3 cm x 4.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Arte Textile, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired in the 1980s

Nicks to peripheries and bird, with one stable fissure stemming from front receptacle rim, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and great patina throughout. Old inventory label on base.
