Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Bolivia and Chile, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku), ca. 400 to 700 CE. A striking hand carved stone portrait of an ancient visage featuring two sunken oval eyes made heavy with large pupils, hefty bags, and a raised slightly furrowed browline that flanks a dipped nasal bridge and beak-like nose above thin closed lips. Naturally adorned in sparkling hues of terracotta, sienna, and buff, the long face presents with a tall forehead, defined cheekbones, and a protruding chin. Wide eyes stare out solemnly, making us wish, "If only this face could talk!" We wonder what ancient secrets these mysterious eyes have witnessed. Size: 3" L x 2.875" W (7.6 cm x 7.3 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Lodi Art Gallery Collection, Pasadena, California, USA, before 2010
