Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery stirrup vessel depicting a cacique (prominent societal elder) in a seated position. The figure wears a tunic with two bands of cresting waves and holds a spondylus shell in both hands, perhaps as a type of pan flute. He stares outwards with large ovoid eyes and wears a peaked headdress with an abstract anthropomorphic face on the verso. The stirrup-shaped handle showcases a petite simian creature on the verso who grasps the back of the cylindrical spout. Size: 4.1" W x 7.6" H (10.4 cm x 19.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hirsch collection, New York City, New York, USA, 1950 to 1970
