Caleb Blood Smith (1808-1864) Politician. Smith, a politician from Indiana, was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to serve as the 6th United States Secretary of the Interior from 1861, until 1863 However, Smith had little interest in the job and, with declining health, delegated most of his responsibilities. 7 ¾” x 6 ¼” legal document signed, “C. B. Smith Atty for Pltf,” Fayette Circuit Court, May 6, 1836. Smith has signed a second time on the reverse.
