Seven (7) Civil War Confederate States of America (CSA) related military documents. 1st-4th items: Four (4) documents pertaining to Captain Marcus W. Johnson, 57th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Field & Staff Company and Assistant Commissary of Subsistence. 1st item: Document titled "Hed [sic] Quarters Near Vicksburg/May 23rd 1863/ A List of Men belonging to 57th Regt wanting rations" featuring 48 names arranged by Companies A-I, obverse, 5 additional names with a notation stating the total of 53, reverse. Reverse also includes the annotation "taken down by P.H. Ward, Medical Dispenser, 57th Regt " above a note reading "please state whither the 5 officers will receive any thing extra...Capt Boner asked me to find out whither servants were intitled [sic] to rations or not" facsimile signature in Ward's hand for "Capt Johnson Commissary 57th Ga Regiment". 2nd item: Letter from Johnson, Fort Valley, GA, addressed to Colonel Lucius B. Northrop (1811-1894), Commissary-General of the CSA, Richmond, VA, dated March 21, 1864. The letter reads "Sir, Enclosed please find my summary for February 1864...I have been delayed in collecting dues from officers of 57th Ga Regt the balance of Eleven hundred and Sixty-dollars as shown in statement is on hand and subject to your orders" with Johnson's signature. Also includes an envelope reading "Returns for May 1863" in ink and in pencil, with two pieces of folded paper reading "Monthly Summary Statement - March 1863" and "Quarterly Returns Ending 30th June 1863". 3rd-4th items: Two (2) copies of "Form No. 6., Monthly Summary Statement of Funds Received and disbursed at Vicksburg, Miss. in April 1863" and "June 1863" with printed and handwritten text completed by Johnson as Assistant Commissary of Subsistence. 5th item: ALS from Brigadier General Daniel Huggins (1810-1897), undated but likely written circa May 1862 when he was under the command of General Braxton Bragg (1817-1876) in charge of Depots and Rear Guard. ALS reading "Generals, I have ordered 100 Mule Teams complete from Memphis. 30 have come. Please order the rest" with Ruggle's signature. 6th item: Letter from Sergeant Alexander M. Bickham, 11th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Company A, addressed to Colonel Uncas Bourne, Ordnance Officer, General and Staff Officers, Non-Regimental Enlisted Men, Meridian, MS, at Headquarters, Office of Conscription, Enterprise, MS, dated November 2, 1863. The letter reads "...I respectfully inform you that the list of detailed men in your employ was received in due time but owning to the great prep of busine[s]s a reply was neglected" with Bickham's signature. Includes envelope with 10 cent Jefferson Davis stamp and illegible postmark. 7th item: CSA Soldiers Relief document from the Auditor's Office, Macon, MS, addressed to the County Treasurer of Carroll County, dated February 15, 1865. Document reads "Pursuant to the provisions of the act for relief of families of soldiers, approved August 13, 1864, the Governor, Auditor, and Treasurer, have this day made a distribution of $242,185.00, in change notes, being a part of the sum appropriated in said act. The pro rata share of your county, of which is $5083.96/100, and is in the Treasury subject to your order, on return of this notice to this office, with the certificate of the Probate Clerk endorsed thereon, showing that you have given bond as required by an act entitled "An act better to provide for the families of soldiers," approved December 2, 1863", with A. J. Gillespie, Auditor of Public Accounts, signature, with B. F. Jones signature confirming the receipt of Auditor's Warrant No. 897 for $5083.96/100, dated March 28, 1863, below. Handwritten Probate Clerk certificate, signed by Jones as Marshall County Treasurer with additional writing and 10 cent Jefferson Davis stamp, reverse. Provenance: Private Knoxville, TN collection.
