Item Details
Description
- Eppa Hunton IV, Confederate Brigadier General CSA, “Lee’s Lieutenant” and commanding officer at Gettysburg, U.S. Representative and Senator from Virginia, 8 th Virginia Infantry Major Eppa Hunton IV's copy of LEE'S LIEUTENANTS: A STUDY IN COMMAND (3 Volumes, Complete) New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1942, 1943, 1944, Hard Cover. Good+ binding. Octavo. lvi [2], 773; xlv, [3], 760; xlvi, [2], 862 pp., ports, illus. maps. All First edition, first printing. Signed by Freeman on the front free endpaper of Volume I. Bound as issued in gray cloth with title in gold on the front covers and spine. Binding is a bit worn with slightly tanned spines; corners and spine ends softened; hinges are a bit loose; evidence of damp staining to the inner margin of both endpapers of Volume I; a very faint tideline to the top margin of the same volume. This copy belonged to the descendent of one of Lee’s Lieutenants, Eppa Hunton IV, grandson of both Confederate Generals Eppa Hunton and William H. Payne; Hunton IV's name and stamp on the endpapers of each volume; additionally Volume II has a gift inscription to Hunton IV from his wife. Incredibly, these books appear to have been sent to Hunton IV while serving in the U.S. Army overseas during World War 2, with one of Hunton IV’s signatures indicating he was in Rabat, Morocco in 1943 when he signed the volume, and another volume signed in Italy in 1944. Hunton IV himself was an officer in the Army. Very occasionally marginalia throughout the set. Nevins describes this work as "[t]he ablest descriptive and evaluative study of the leading generals (and their campaigns) in Lee's army; massively documented, movingly written, highly authoritative, and faintly smug" CWB I, 30. Harwell states that it "supplements and complements R. E. Lee. It also stands in its own right as one of the great works of military history" In Tall Cotton 61. An acceptable set of Freeman's critically acclaimed inquiry into the Confederacy following and expanding on Freeman's Pulitzer Prize winning biography "R. E. Lee." A notable association.
