Description
**Originally Listed At $275**
Magna Graecia, South Italic, Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A lovely Daunian polychrome pottery kyathos, or dipper, with a characteristically raised looped handle attached to a shallow bowl with a subtly flared rim and a protruding adornment opposite the handle (perhaps intended to be a zoomorphic or avian head), all embellished with an extensive painted decorative program delineated in black and red hues on a cream ground featuring concentric bands and stylized geometrics called listati. Particularly elaborate are the abstract motifs on the handle, tondo, and underside of the base. Daunian society included a blend of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area. Though many Daunian vessel forms were strongly influenced by the native Italians of this region, the kyathos was a Greek creation and the generous width of the strap was purely Daunian. A stunning example, replete with a brilliant silhouette and finely delineated decorative program. Size: 7.875" W x 3" H (20 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: private Swiss collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
