WILMINGTON, Calif. — A circa-1900 Daum Nancy winter scene vase is the top lot at Taylor & Harris‘ Decorative Arts and Jewelry auction on Sunday, November 26. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Founded in 1878, Daum remains one of the top art glass manufacturers to this day, with a team of hundreds of local artisans in Nancy, France still producing each work by hand. Daum was a leading manufacturer of Art Nouveau glass, setting many of the standards of that movement. This wintry scene featuring lonesome trees on a snow-packed landscape is 16in in height and in excellent condition. It is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Manfred Wild (b. 1944-) is a German designer born into a family of gemstone processors dating to 1630. He calls himself “Crazy Manfred” due to the whimsical nature of his gemstone figurines produced in partnership with Emile Becker, a company that describes itself as being known for “eccentric gem objects.” This watermelon tourmaline duck miniature figurine by Wild and Becker features 18K gold feet and diamond eyes and carries an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

Luigi Genazzi (1876-1946) was a noted Italian silversmith working out of Milan. He began his career in the 1920s and his son Eros joined the firm a decade later. Working together, the father-son team produced spectacular designs with a timeless look. This six-piece silver and wood coffee and tea service is from Eros’ period of production, likely the 1950s. It weighs approximately 215 troy ounces and is estimated at $4,000-$5,000.

The sale includes four lots of Buccellatti, including a sterling silver figurine of a lion that is estimated at $1,000-$1,500, and a set of cocktail forks at $500-$700.

Fans of Limoges porcelain have a wealth of lots from which to choose, particularly when it comes to dinner services. A set of 12 Limoges Raynaud porcelain dinner plates in the Pompei pattern has an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.

LONE JACK, Mo. — Soulis Auctions’ Fall Gallery Auction of Fine & Decorative Art, held on October 14, produced remarkable results among the expected top lots — with some surprising performances by down-card entries. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s star lots were two originals by Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) from his most desirable “Middle Period,” in which, as the auctioneer beautifully states, the artist created his works with “100s of broad, confident, one-and-done strokes of high-relief impasto, resulting in canvases that seem as much chiseled as painted.”

The paintings had been in a Kansas public library, purchased directly from the artist. Golden Aspens, dating to 1929, topped the day, hammering at $160,000 ($196,800 with buyer’s premium), while Smoky River, from 1921, followed at $120,000 ($147,600 with buyer’s premium).

Famed Regionalist Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) also turned in a fine performance with The Race (Homeward Bound) from 1942, a lithograph issued by Associated American Artists, the New York gallery that from 1934 to 2000 helped promote and sell affordable art, in turn helping to build art sales as a viable business model. The lithograph hammered for $15,000 ($18,450 with buyer’s premium).

Another surprising result was a Louis Vuitton shoe trunk, estimated at $8,000-$12,000. The apparently unique and bespoke trunk includes 25 shoe compartments and eight slide-out drawers, with all the LV maker’s marks present. It sold for $36,000 ($44,280 with buyer’s premium).

BEVERLY, Mass. — The first day of the Annual Thanksgiving Auction at Kaminski Auctions from Saturday, November 25 and Sunday, November 26 is devoted to the collection of Robert ‘Bob’ Eigelberger. A successful architect and developer and long-time Palm Beach, Florida resident, his Mediterranean-style home, named Casa Phippsberger, housed many European antiques, including a vast array of mainly Italian tin-glazed earthenwares. These will be offered by Kaminski in more than 70 lots.

While Italian majolica or faience enjoyed its greatest moments in the 16th and 17th centuries, it experienced a significant revival in the 19th century as part of the wider wave of interest in medieval and Renaissance works of art. Most of the pieces in the Eigelberger collection date from this later — and significantly more affordable — period.

Among the most celebrated names in the 19th-century canon is Angelo Minghetti of Bologna, whose large-scale models in the manner of Lucca della Robbia were sometimes mistaken for what was considered ‘antique’ majolica. A regular at national and international exhibitions from the 1860s until his death in 1885, he was probably the maker of a large bust of the Roman emperor Octavius that carries an estimate of $2,000-$3,000. Standing 2ft 10in high, with its polychrome plinth adding a further 7in, Octavius was one of a series made by Minghetti, another of which is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Many pieces in the collection follow the istoriato, or narrative style, typically depicting classical or religious scenes. Probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century is a large 2ft, 2in high urn with a dragon head handle and a continuous Biblical scene, estimated at $350-$550, and an Urbino-style majolica istoriato dish painted with a scene from Greek mythology, estimated at $400-$600.

Among the few non-Italian lots is a pair of Hispano-Moresque chargers, each decorated in cobalt blue and pink luster. Made in the late 19th century when a market had developed for good copies, these are estimated at $400-$600.

CRANSTON, R.I. — The illustration art collection of painter, illustrator, sculptor, and historian Carl Pugliese (1916-1982) took 40 years to come to market, but when it did, at Bruneau & Co. on October 14, the wait proved profitably worthwhile, with many lots skyrocketing past their estimates. Pugliese was an ardent fan of illustration-based art, often seen in vintage advertising, on book covers and the like. He befriended many of the artists he admired, and in doing so acquired many works signed and inscribed to him by those artists.

The top lot of the sale was just one of five Howard Pyle (1853-1911) paintings to cross the block. Death of Montcalm depicts the French general on horseback riding into Quebec bloodied and injured. Estimated at $5,000-$8,000, it hammered for an astounding $77,000 and sold for $96,250 with buyer’s premium, shattering all presale expectations.

Another Pugliese favorite was Tom Lovell (1909-1997), whose long career in commercial art produced hundreds of magazine and pulp covers, military art and landscapes of the American West. Carl owned 13 Lovell originals, all of which performed solidly. The near-photographic depiction of Mongols being greeted by locals was originally a commission for True Magazine (1937-1974), at one time America’s largest-circulation publication for men. The work hammered for $12,000 and sold for $15,000 with buyer’s premium, far ahead of its $1,000-$2,000 estimate.

A Saturday Evening Post cover illustration by a titan of commercial illustration, J. C. Leyendecker (1874-1951), was another top seller. Leyendecker produced an astounding 322 works for the Post over his career, and this one, of a matron peeling apples, appeared on the 1925 Thanksgiving issue. It hammered for $11,000 and sold for $13,750 with buyer’s premium, soaring above its estimate of $800-$1,200.

NEW YORK — When it comes to animation art, there is one name that has led the market since the late 1930s. Based in Los Angeles at that time, the animators at Walt Disney Studios cranked out many thousands of celluloid images, or cels, of Mickey Mouse and other now-beloved characters for cartoons and film shorts. It released its first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, just before Christmas in 1937. That film was a huge hit, but were it not for another California company — Courvoisier Galleries — much of the original artwork generated to create it might have been lost to history.
