Chinese Export silver, Thomas Hart Benton, Peter Max share stage at Quinn’s Feb. 23

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Works by Thomas Hart Benton, Paul Reed, sculptor Bill Mack, and Old Lyme Colony Impressionist Will Howe Foote will join European and modern furniture and beautiful objets d’art at Quinn’s Friday, February 23 online Fine & Decorative Arts Auction. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A selection of fine prints is led by a 1955 Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) lithograph titled Running Horses. The print is from an Associated American Artists edition of 75 and is artist-signed in pencil. Its estimate is $6,000-$8,000.

Other noteworthy prints and lithographs run the gamut of genres and individual artistic styles. A circa-1997 Peter Max mixed media and acrylic on paper artwork titled Liberty Head II is signed and estimated at $600-$800, and three 19th-century Frederic S. Remington (1861-1909) cowboy-themed photogravures are entered with individual estimates of $500-$700.

Six lots in the sale represent artworks by Washington DC artist Paul Reed (1919-2015). At the time of his death, Reed was the last living member of the Washington Color School, an art collective that gained national acclaim in the 1960s. Reed’s #21, a 1962 acrylic on canvas depicting green organic shapes in a circle, is signed, dated, and titled on the verso. It is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Two bas-relief bonded-bronze sculptures by Bill Mack (b. 1944-) will be auctioned. One of them, measuring 54in wide, depicts a reclining woman draped glamorously in a bedsheet. Signed at the lower left, it is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

There are three lots of sterling silver from Tiffany & Co., topped by an elegant Model 17880A tea set comprising a teapot, a lidded sugar, and a creamer with tray. Made between 1907 and 1947, the set carries a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.

At the forefront of the Asian Art category is a five-piece Chinese Export sterling silver tea set decorated in high relief with a dragon-and-cloud pattern. The set consists of a hot water kettle on its matching stand with a burner, a teapot, a lidded sugar bowl, and a creamer, each marked ‘STERLING,’ plus a waste bin marked ‘Chun Yin.’ All have dragon and/or pearl-form figural adornments or handles. The lot estimate is $3,000-$5,000.

In addition to Japanese woodblock prints (Hiroshige, Koson, Kimura, et al.), an array of Asian decorative art will be presented, including porcelains and antique netsukes from the Estate of Maybelle Dore, past chairwoman of the International Netsuke Society, Northern California chapter. Among the prominent pieces in the Dore collection is a 19th-century netsuke of Ashinaga and Tenaga with an octopus, which was acquired sometime between the early 1960s and late 1980s. It is signed ‘Tomochika’ and carries an estimate of $3,000-$4,000.

LONE JACK, Mo. — An amazing collection of 11 works by Swedish American landscape master Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) provides the focus of Soulis AuctionsWinter Fine Art sale on Saturday, February 24. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A native of Sweden, Sandzen received a position at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas in 1894, where he would spend the next 52 years teaching art. During that time, he amassed a highly respected and valuable body of work that performs well with contemporary collectors. The sale’s top-estimated lots are both Sandzen oils. Scene from Rocky Mountain National Park dates to 1936 and demonstrates the artist’s knack for capturing the reflectiveness of water, while Study from the Rocky Mountain National Park is from 1922 and from what is known as Sandzen’s ‘middle period’, in which his technique was to use ‘short, singular, confident strokes’ to his brushwork. Both paintings are estimated at $40,000-$50,000.

The sale includes a number of signed Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) lithographs issued in the 1940s and 1950s by Associated American Artists. Chief among them is a 1955 lithograph titled Running Horses. In the stylized image, a trio of horses keep pace with a steam locomotive passing by in the background. It carries an estimate of $6,000-$9,000.

Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) is a French sculptor who also produced limited editions in bronze. This 1902 example in dark green-brown patination is Le Petite Mediterranee or La Mediterranee, etude. It bears the foundry mark Alexis Rudier, Fondeur, Paris and has the artist’s interlaced AM monogram. The piece is currently in France for authentication. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An extraordinary collection of works by American Regionalist Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) will be offered at Circle Auction on Saturday, December 2. Featuring more than 110 paintings and works on paper, the Campanella collection is the most extensive single-owner collection of Benton’s artworks outside the Benton Trust. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

It was assembled by Vincent Campanella (1915-2001), a fellow artist who had an on-again, off-again relationship with the man that spanned about 25 years. Campanella was among the most memorable and compelling interviewees in Ken Burns’s 1989 documentary on Thomas Hart Benton, unafraid to criticize him and nonetheless moved to tears at the memory of his death.

Campanella, a New York City native and an art prodigy in his youth, met Benton after moving to Kansas City to teach in 1949, at the age of 35. Benton, then 60, was well-established and very much a celebrity in Kansas City, though the New York art world had moved on from his beloved Regionalism to the distinctly non-figurative art form of Abstract Impressionism.

Benton and Campanella’s friendship suffered a blow in April 1951, when both appeared on a Kansas City panel discussion of Modern art. According to observers, the event quickly narrowed to a dialog between the two in which Campanella defended the art movement, ably holding his own against Benton. This annoyed the older man so much that he stopped speaking to Campanella, only to resume the relationship in 1973 as if nothing had happened. When Benton died two years later, leaving unfinished his last work, a mural commission for the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, Benton’s widow asked Campanella to complete it. He agreed, and it is possible that he accepted some of the pieces in the auction in exchange for helping finish his friend’s final masterpiece; it is believed that Campanella acquired most, if not all of the works, during the 1970s. (Campanella also evidently rescued the artist from posthumous ignominy by adding two strings to an instrument that Benton had depicted with four.)

Benton scholar Henry Adams said of the Campanella collection that it is “Not strictly a connoisseur’s collection, since the works vary greatly in finish and even in quality, it reveals instead an artist’s interest in Benton’s working methods, and in the nature of his artistic development. It provides an extraordinary picture of Benton’s development, as well as a record of one of his most intriguing friendships.” In 2001, perhaps before his death on December 23 of that year, Campanella and his family sold the collection to the consignor.

Earning the highest estimate among the lots in the auction is Character Study of an Old Woman, a 1926 oil on canvas whose sitter is unidentified, but who might be one of Benton’s neighbors on Martha’s Vineyard, the island off Massachusetts where he spent his summers. It carries an estimate of $30,000-$60,000.

Also featured is an oil and gouache on board study of the Teton mountain range for his 1955-1960 painting The Sheepherder, estimated at $20,000-$30,000. The lot notes quote Benton’s daughter Jessie’s memory of watching him struggle with the task: “He took aside many years to paint mountains. He said it was the damnedest hardest thing he ever did, that mountains are impossible to paint. It took him years to finally paint a picture that he was satisfied with. But you know that’s why he paid no attention to all those critics. He would get these things that he had to do, and while they were still quibbling over Persephone, he was off in Wyoming trying to paint the Tetons. Off in the woods in Jackson Hole driving around by himself for years.”

GENESEO, N.Y. — An amazing collection of antique American fire alarms and fire pumper lanterns will be offered at Cottone Auctions‘ Art & Antiques two-day sale, taking place Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30. The catalogs are now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The first session’s top-estimated lot is a fascinating study from 1950, Oil Well, by Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975). A leader in the American Regionalist art movement, Oil Well captures the essence of Benton’s oeuvre: everyday people at work in iconic environments. The unframed watercolor on paper is estimated at $50,000-$80,000.

Charles Allen Winter (1869-1942) was a painter who would work as a muralist for the Depression-era Works Progress Administration (WPA), creating public art displays that still exist to this day. He was also associated with the Roycrofters, illustrating many of founder Elbert Hubbard’s “Little Sermons” in Cosmopolitan magazine. Pandora is an oil on canvas documenting the fateful moment from the myth in which Pandora opens the box and unleashes a host of evils upon the world. It was originally hung in Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York, which opened just two years before Winter’s death. Pandora is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

Two classic Arts & Crafts lamps are included in the Day One lineup as well. A Duffner & Kimberly Poppy floor lamp and a Tiffany Studios Daffodil table lamp, both circa 1920, carry individual estimates of $30,000-$50,000.

Twenty-one antique fire alarms are a feature of the second session. The devices were triggered either manually or by the presence of a fire, ringing loud, shrill bell reports to warn inhabitants of the danger. The alarms also communicated the presence of fire to the local fire station, originally by telegraph, enabling firefighters to roll to the scene quickly.

First patented in 1852, when fires regularly killed people without warning, the fire alarm industry would come to be dominated by Gamewell, which by 1910 virtually controlled the American market for the devices. Gamewell continues in the fire alarm and suppression business today as a division of Honeywell. This Gamewell alarm from the late 1800s is estimated at $5,000-$8,000.

A four-lot group of fire pumper lanterns is also included. Affixed to the antique fire apparatus as a form of marker light, the lanterns feature classic 19th-century styling. The top-estimated lot in the group, at $2,000-$4,000, is a Merrill Hose Company lantern from Canandaigua, New York.

LONE JACK, Mo. — Soulis AuctionsFall Gallery Auction of Fine & Decorative Art, held on October 14, produced remarkable results among the expected top lots — with some surprising performances by down-card entries. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s star lots were two originals by Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) from his most desirable “Middle Period,” in which, as the auctioneer beautifully states, the artist created his works with “100s of broad, confident, one-and-done strokes of high-relief impasto, resulting in canvases that seem as much chiseled as painted.”

The paintings had been in a Kansas public library, purchased directly from the artist. Golden Aspens, dating to 1929, topped the day, hammering at $160,000 ($196,800 with buyer’s premium), while Smoky River, from 1921, followed at $120,000 ($147,600 with buyer’s premium).

Famed Regionalist Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) also turned in a fine performance with The Race (Homeward Bound) from 1942, a lithograph issued by Associated American Artists, the New York gallery that from 1934 to 2000 helped promote and sell affordable art, in turn helping to build art sales as a viable business model. The lithograph hammered for $15,000 ($18,450 with buyer’s premium).

Another surprising result was a Louis Vuitton shoe trunk, estimated at $8,000-$12,000. The apparently unique and bespoke trunk includes 25 shoe compartments and eight slide-out drawers, with all the LV maker’s marks present. It sold for $36,000 ($44,280 with buyer’s premium).

LONE JACK, Mo. – Pride in homegrown artists who’ve achieved success on a much larger stage has spurred the meteoric rise of interest in Regionalist art. The American Midwest, home to Soulis Auctions, is the focus of its Saturday, October 14 320-lot October Gallery Auction. The catalog is now available for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.

The sale is highlighted by original works of Midwest Regionalist and Kansas City art, including examples from those dubbed “The Big Three”: Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry and Grant Wood.

The sale’s top lot comes from Birger Sandzen (Swedish and American, 1871-1964). Sandzen viewed his paintings as “nature studies” and, as he wrote in a letter to his brother, he strived for “the simplest possible means of expression.” Golden Aspens, from 1929, is from the artist’s desirable Middle Period. It previously resided in the public library of Lindsborg, Kansas, having been acquired directly from the artist, and now comes to market with an $80,000-$120,000 estimate.

America’s heartland is where painter, muralist, printmaker and art educator Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was born and spent most of his life. Benton was a champion of Realism whose initial opposition to the Modernist movement seemed untenable, but in the early 1920s, Benton reconsidered and opted to explore the new style.

That sea change in Benton’s career is embodied in an associated pair of artworks to be auctioned on October 14 as one lot. His mixed-media painting on board, executed circa 1922, is titled Benton Family on South Beach. The 13.75 by 9.5in work served as the study for a much larger (53 by 33in) textile which he envisioned his wife, Rita, embellishing with needlework. The linen panel was never fully stitched, thus leaving much of Benton’s original composition visible. It has an estimate of $60,000-$90,000.

Grant Wood (1891-1942) is an enduring representative for Regionalism, having created American Gothic in 1930, one of the most recognized paintings of rural America.  The sale includes a number of Wood-signed lithographs, topped by Seed Time and Harvest, dating to 1937. It is estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

With a swirling tornado behind him as he summons support from his fellow abolitionists, John Brown is a striking example of the work of John Steuart Curry (1897-1946). The pencil-signed lithograph from 1939 is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
