Early Steiff Peter Rabbit toy hopped away with almost $12K at Cottone

GENESEO, N.Y. – The January 24 sale at Cottone Auctions was eclectic in the best possible way, posting healthy numbers for lots from several different categories of collecting. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The overall top lot was a circa-1905 Tiffany Studios 10-light Lily lamp in favrile glass and bronze, retaining its original patina, which sold for $23,000 ($28,750 with buyer’s premium). But hopping away with a lot of attention and a sum far above its $700-$1,000 estimate was a circa-1910 Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit stuffed animal, made by the venerable German toy firm Steiff. Created sometime within the decade following the first appearance of the beloved children’s book by British author Beatrix Potter, the rabbit, described as ‘rare’, sported red slippers, an aqua blue coat with yellow stitched details, and the all-important metal Steiff button in its right ear. The Steiff Peter Rabbit secured $9,500 ($11,875 with buyer’s premium).

Another lot that flew far past its estimate was a group of four Wiigwaasabak, or birch bark scrolls, created by the Ojibwa (Anishinaabe) tribal community circa 1900. The scrolls, written in the tribe’s ideographic language with a stylus, were evidently uninterpreted, but could hold information about Anishinaabe history, customs, rituals, song lyrics, or even recipes. Estimated at $500-$800, the foursome brought $7,500 ($9,375 with buyer’s premium).

Further testifying to the breadth of the sale lineup were several lots of Daum Nancy cameo glass miniatures, with the highest performer among them being a trio dating to the early 20th century that took the forms of a delicate cup painted with leaves and purple blooms, a yellow-ground vase with a long neck decorated with red flowers, and a pitcher-like vessel with a spherical stopper. Together, they realized $6,000 ($7,500 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $400-$600. And a stoneware jug from 1806, featuring an incised cobalt design and credited to potters Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts of South Amboy, New Jersey, estimated at $500-$800, earned $5,250 ($6,562 with buyer’s premium).

WILMINGTON, Calif. — A circa-1900 Daum Nancy winter scene vase is the top lot at Taylor & Harris‘ Decorative Arts and Jewelry auction on Sunday, November 26. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Founded in 1878, Daum remains one of the top art glass manufacturers to this day, with a team of hundreds of local artisans in Nancy, France still producing each work by hand. Daum was a leading manufacturer of Art Nouveau glass, setting many of the standards of that movement. This wintry scene featuring lonesome trees on a snow-packed landscape is 16in in height and in excellent condition. It is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Manfred Wild (b. 1944-) is a German designer born into a family of gemstone processors dating to 1630. He calls himself “Crazy Manfred” due to the whimsical nature of his gemstone figurines produced in partnership with Emile Becker, a company that describes itself as being known for “eccentric gem objects.” This watermelon tourmaline duck miniature figurine by Wild and Becker features 18K gold feet and diamond eyes and carries an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

Luigi Genazzi (1876-1946) was a noted Italian silversmith working out of Milan. He began his career in the 1920s and his son Eros joined the firm a decade later. Working together, the father-son team produced spectacular designs with a timeless look. This six-piece silver and wood coffee and tea service is from Eros’ period of production, likely the 1950s. It weighs approximately 215 troy ounces and is estimated at $4,000-$5,000.

The sale includes four lots of Buccellatti, including a sterling silver figurine of a lion that is estimated at $1,000-$1,500, and a set of cocktail forks at $500-$700.

Fans of Limoges porcelain have a wealth of lots from which to choose, particularly when it comes to dinner services. A set of 12 Limoges Raynaud porcelain dinner plates in the Pompei pattern has an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.

DOUGLASS, Kan. — Woody Auction worked with multiple collectors to create a 362-lot consignment bonanza in cameo and art glass, miniature lamps, and reverse-painted items for its Art Glass, Wave Crest & Much More sale scheduled for Saturday, October 14. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Creators of fine art glass since 1903 in Corning (Steuben County), New York, Steuben, which closed in 2011, remains a coveted manufacturer. Not one but two examples of Steuben acid cutback cameo art glass vases appear as sequential lots in the sale (lot 100, lot 101). They are both individually estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

A fine Daum Nancy table lamp is a top-estimate item, featuring French cameo art glass depicting a winter scene. Though it requires a complete rewiring, it is otherwise all-original and has an $8,000-$12,000 estimate.

Unusual is a fitting description for this undated Czechoslovakian figural peacock table lamp. Missing a few glass beads, it is estimated at $750-$1,500.

Steuben’s Haviland & Co. line was known for its iridescent Aurene items. From a Kansas collection comes this striking decanter and six-glass set in a gold and melon finish. It carries an estimate of $750-$1,250.

DENVER, Pa. – During the second session of their June 8-10 Fine & Decorative Arts Auction, Morphy’s sold a rare circa 1905-1910 Tiffany Studios “Poppy” leaded-glass table lamp for an astounding $541,200 (all prices quoted include a 23% buyer’s premium). Based upon their research, Morphy’s believes it to be a world-record auction price for a Tiffany lamp in the Poppy motif.
