AMESBURY, Mass. – John McInnis Auctioneers distinguished itself as a house specializing in John F. Kennedy material in February 2013, when it dispersed the collection of longtime Kennedy aide and friend Dave Powers (1912-1998). Despite a snowstorm and heavy demand that played havoc with Internet connections, McInnis sold the 2,000-piece Powers collection in 723 lots, only five of which were passed. It was memorably topped by an Air Force One bomber jacket owned by JFK and later given to Powers, which hammered for $570,000.

A measure of that same Kennedy magic may revisit the house on Sunday, February 25, when it offers more than 100 lots from the estate of Helen Mary Keyes, a Kennedy aide and family friend who also helped with the creation of the John F. Kennedy Library. The catalog for the sale, in which the Kennedy-related material appears as lots 301-417, is available now for bidding through LiveAuctioneers.

Keyes had long and storied ties to the Kennedy family. Her father was the dentist to Joe and Rose Kennedy’s children, and the families’ children became friends. Keyes went on to play a trusted role in John F. Kennedy’s 1952 campaign for a Massachusetts senate seat, hosting ladies’ teas for the rising star of the Democratic Party. Her involvement with Kennedy’s political career extended to his 1960 presidential campaign. This is evidenced by, among many other mementos on offer in the sale, a 1960 Kennedy for President poster in a famed red and blue band design, estimated at $200-$400.

Another piece from Keyes’ Kennedy trove, striking in its rarity, is a printed silk campaign scarf from John F. Kennedy’s successful bid to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate. The scarf, featuring the same portrait of a strikingly young-looking Kennedy repeated once at each corner and once in the center over an image of the U.S. Capitol, is estimated at $500-$1,000. Keyes also earned an invitation to the 1953 Newport, Rhode Island wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier. It, along with its original envelope and several period clippings covering the nuptials, is presented with an estimate of $300-$600.

The ladies’ teas that Keyes hosted in 1952 were among the many events that helped Kennedy win the allegiance of women voters in Massachusetts, but they certainly reflect a bygone era. A lot of memorabilia relating to the pro-Kennedy teas and receptions includes a photo of Rose Kennedy addressing tea volunteers with her son seated to her right, as well as newspaper clippings, schedules, speaking points, details for organizers, and two pairs of long, white, formal kid gloves that tea attendees would have been expected to wear to such an event. The whole is estimated at $300-$600.

Numerous lots in the auction are letters from John and Robert Kennedy to Keyes, either typewritten or handwritten, but always hand-signed by them, often with humorous inscribed asides. Lot 312 demonstrates the importance of the ladies’ teas to JFK’s Senate campaign. In the handwritten 1952 letter, the future president thanks Keyes for her help in the U.S. Senate campaign with the inscription, “This expresses inadequately my thanks for all that you did. As I heard Ohara said at the Clover Club dinner Mr. Lodge was drowned in five hundred gallons of tea you had poured.” That letter now carries an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

Another JFK letter worthy of mention dates to May 1952, written to Keyes on Congress of the United States letterhead. It is further distinguished by its original envelope, which, unusually, was hand-addressed by Kennedy. It comes with a campaign photograph and its matching negative that pictures a grinning Kennedy with Keyes and two others. The lot has an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

Another in the army of women who helped the Kennedy clan achieve their political ambitions was Polly Fitzgerald, a Kennedy cousin by marriage. The very Royal Worcester porcelain tea and dinner service she used to court possible Kennedy voters in the 1950s and 1960s appears in the auction lineup with an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

WACO, Texas — A stunningly engraved Civil War-era Henry .44 caliber octagon barreled rifle blew past estimates on January 20 to land at $135,000 ($155,250 with buyer’s premium) at A&S Antique Auction Co. The full sale’s results are available for review at LiveAuctioneers.

Originally from the Buddy King collection, the Henry rifle came to the attention of noted antiques firearm historian and documentarian R. L. Wilson. He had ample opportunity to examine it and its accompanying provenance materials, and later compiled a 23-page report. Wilson was so impressed by this Henry that he stated it would be featured in his upcoming third edition of Winchester Engraving.

Made in 1862 and serial numbered 2386, the Henry is engraved in the style of master engraver Louis D. Nimschke and remains in fine condition, with all marked and numbered parts properly identified. Wilson felt there may be a possible attribution to both L. D. Nimschke as the engraver and a Winchester family member, Caleb Thomas Winchester (1847-1920), as the recipient of this Henry; the casing engravings include a T and W. Winchester is noted as a 40-year-tenured professor of English literature at Wesleyan University, and would have been just 22 when the rifle was built.

A&S described the Henry as having “rich aged patina on the receiver with light silver finish visible, and smooth aged brown patina on the barrel. The wood to metal fit is excellent. All original markings are clear and sharp. The action is flawless and the bore is very fine. This unique Henry is fine enough for anyone’s collection!!”

Bidders agreed. Opening at $50,000, it took only 10 bids to reach the winning mark of $135,000, just above A&S’ original estimate of $100,000-$130,000.

NEW YORK — Advertising mascots can not only make a brand stand out but also provoke an emotional response in audiences, increasing the chance that they become loyal customers. Animals are a popular motif in advertising, and perhaps none are more striking than those in motor oil and gas signs.

Highway and gas station signs of the 20th century did more than let drivers know where they could fuel up their vehicles. They helped brighten long road trips, figuratively and literally, with their bright logos and bold graphics and lettering. These signs used both obvious and subtle messages to tout the attributes of their products to consumers — reliability, speed, dependability, smoothness, and the like.

In the realm of petroliana, animal mascots are typically robust-looking and chosen to reflect the quality of the particular oil or gas. A Power-Lube Motor Oil double-sided porcelain sign that sold for $10,000 plus the buyer’s premium in August 2022 at Richmond Auctions was titled ‘Smooth as the Tread of a Tiger’ and prominently pictures a tiger in mid-step.

“Bright colors and animals in graphics are going to sell your product,” said John Mihovetz, department head and expert in automobilia and petroliana at Dan Morphy Auctions, based in Denver, Pennsylvania. Explaining how marketers probably realized the merits of animals as mascots, he said, “I think they were looking for eye-catch. When it’s just in a sea of advertising, animals are such a great way to show that.”

Animal-themed petroliana signs are highly collectible, and the market was lively even before the pandemic spurred a wave of nostalgia that drove collectibles markets to new heights in 2020. Petroliana markets have shown little signs of abating, and that definitely holds true for animal-themed petroliana signs. “I personally think it just comes down to eye appeal. If you look at some of the graphics that are on the signs and you look at what’s really bringing the money, it’s highly detailed graphics,” Mihovetz said. “And most of the time you’re dealing with a great animal graphic or Native American graphics. That’s really what’s going to push the price — that and condition.”

One fine example that had everything going for it was a Husky Gasoline & Motor Oils ‘Gets You Thru’ single-sided tin billboard sign emblazoned with the image of a Husky dog. Retaining its original wood frame, this 96-by-60in sign attained $390,000 plus the buyer’s premium in September 2022 at Dan Morphy Auctions. Most petroliana signs were made from porcelain, which usually withstood the punishments of the outdoors better than tin, but this one was in fine overall condition, considering its age, and it retained good color and gloss.

“It’s one of two known example examples and by far the highest-rated example — a centerpiece for a collection. You see it in person and it’s unbelievable, just a mesmerizing piece and so colorful and graphic,” Mihovetz added.

All manner of animals have served as petroliana advertising mascots, including the mythical and the extinct. Mobil has been a major player in the petroliana world dating back to when it was known as Standard Oil, and has embraced a beast from the former category. Its Pegasus mascot is instantly recognizable and has graced porcelain and neon signs alike, such as a large Pegasus porcelain and neon sign that rotates. The double-signed sign, standing 103in tall, made $80,000 plus the buyer’s premium in July 2023 at Richmond Auctions.

Leading the contingent of extinct animals is Sinclair’s beloved apatosaurus (formerly called a brontosaurus), known as Dino. This longtime advertising mascot was trademarked in 1932 and chosen by the company’s advertising writers to use in marketing two years earlier. The writers played off the company’s use of crude oil that dated to the time of dinosaurs, and came up with Dino as their friendly ambassador. He appeared in many ad campaigns and signs, including a Sinclair Pennsylvania Motor Oils porcelain curb sign that earned $40,000 plus the buyer’s premium in October 2022 at Dan Morphy Auctions.

Polar bears have been pressed into service as mascots for Coca-Cola and Polar Seltzer, which has an inflatable lifesize version topping its roadside headquarters in Worcester, Massachusetts. Petroliana answered with the polar bear mascot for Zerolene, which can be seen in a 24in-round Standard Oil Zerolene single-sided porcelain sign that realized $44,000 plus the buyer’s premium in March 2022 at Richmond Auctions.

An unusual choice for a motor oil product mascot is certainly the parrot that appears on an Atlantic NC Motor Oil ‘Stops Ford Chatter Instantly’ wood-framed sign, which sold for $18,000 plus the buyer’s premium in April 2022 at Matthews Auctions, LLC. This parrot has his beak muzzled to suggest that cars run quieter with Atlantic oil.

Collectors are especially fond of service station signs, and a particular favorite is a 1940 Frontier Gas ‘Rarin’ to Go’ example in porcelain. This double-sided oval sign features a gold horse and rider in the center above four stars with a unique script font; other similar Frontier signs lack stars and have a bifurcated red-and-white background. One such sign rode well past its $50,000-$100,000 estimate to bring $170,000 plus the buyer’s premium in March 2023 at Dan Morphy Auctions. Retaining brilliant color and gloss, the sign is cataloged as being in excellent condition and has a 60in diameter.

While the best examples of animal-motif petroliana will typically bring the best prices, Mihovetz explained, “There is always going to be a market for graphic advertising in any condition, especially something with an animal. But if it’s got an animal and it’s really high grade, that’s the stuff that we are seeing right now that is really pushing prices.”

The golden era for oil and gas signs with appealing graphics was between the 1920s and 1950s, he added. Even though these signs were mass-produced, few have survived in great condition. Those considered ‘new old stock,’ which likely languished for decades in warehouses, attic rafters, under floorboards, or in a closet, can easily attain six figures.

Mihovetz said the current market is “unbelievably strong”, and signs with images of animals are bringing huge money. Collectors tend to be mostly men ages 25 and up, but he went on to say “right now, I think it’s a really wide-open market. There are more new buyers entering this market than there were 30 years or more ago, when access to information was an entry barrier. We have seen a lot of sophisticated buyers coming up quickly with all the technology that is available to do research now.”

The best advice Mihovetz has for new collectors is advice he was given years earlier: try to buy the highest-quality piece at whatever price you can afford. “Fortunately, with gas and oil, there is a price point for just about everything,” he said. “There are great, phenomenal mint condition pieces in gas and oil that have graphics of animals that are $1,000, all the way up to the six-figure range, but you have to have patience and wait for a couple good buys here and there.”

MONROVIA, Calif. — John Moran Auctioneers takes an unusual turn with a keen selection of works from contemporary street artists, mixed with classics from the likes of Jean Dufy, Alice Baber, and Doyle Lane. The Art + Design event is slated for Tuesday, February 27 and is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A graffiti / street art sketchbook compiled in 1995-1996 by Jared (Geso) Costa (b. 1977-) is the sale’s interesting selection for the top-estimated lot. Created from three taped-together sketchbooks, the collection features hundreds of miniature ‘tags’ (spray-painted graffiti) and other designs from some of the biggest names to emerge in street art from the 1980s, 1990s, and beyond. Contributors include Shepard Fairey, KAWS, Barry (Twist) McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Ruby Rose Neri, Jared (Geso) Costa, Mr. Element, Spie One, and Grey. The sketchbook is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Street artist Alec Andon (b. 1986-) is better known as Alec Monopoly, who interprets the vintage Parker Brothers Monopoly game Milburn ‘Rich Uncle’ Pennybags character in his compositions. This mixed-media on acrylic A portrait of Mr. Monopoly measures 48 by 36in and is in generally good condition. It carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

Jean Dufy (1888-1964) lovingly painted the Parisian sights around him, in stark contrast to the Fauvist designs of his brother Raoul. The sale includes three works by Jean, with Street view with Sacre Coeur in the distance as the lot with the leading estimate. An undated watercolor and gouache on paper, it measures 20 by 25.25in and is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

Two works by ceramacist Doyle Lane (1923-2002) are included. First up is a classic weed pot from the 1962-1976 period in which Lane created them. Diminutive and sporting a thick speckled blue glaze, it has an estimate of $4,000-$6,000. The second and perhaps even more interesting selection is a grouping of 157 ceramic tiles gathered from Lane’s studio after his death, and then mounted to a plywood backing. Widely exhibited, it is estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

Also on offer is Buried Treasure of the Jaguar, a 1978 watercolor on thick wove paper by abstract expressionist Alice Baber (1928-1982). It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

NEW YORK – On Wednesday, February 21, starting at 3 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct its next Exquisite Fine Art Paintings and Prints auction, featuring precisely 200 lots of choice works of art. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Leading the highlights is a circa-1960s-1970s French School Surrealist oil on canvas, estimated at $2,500-$3,000. It depicts a chic young woman clad in what appears to be colorful foliage standing before a classical city – perhaps Milan – and a backdrop of a hazy orange sky.

A more conventional offering is The Sleepy Fishing Town, a 1950s French School coastal landscape that measures a generous 25 by 45in. A cluster of boats occupies the foreground as a single vessel approaches the group, with a shoreline dominated by mountains visible behind it. The work is estimated at $1,500-$2,000.

Also on offer is a circa-1960s French School mid-century Modern bizarre figurative work, estimated at $2,000-$2,500. It shows a top-hatted individual inside a bottle, waving flags, with their lower body partially obscured by a sign that reads ‘sante sobriete liberte egalite fraternite’, which translates to ‘health sobriety freedom equality fraternity’, an augmentation of the national motto of France.
