NEW YORK – The estate of legendary Broadway playwright and director Arthur Laurents will be auctioned on Saturday, June 2, at Roland Auctions. The auction offers approximately 400 lots from the estate—and 700 lots in total—of fine art, Art glass and Americana, Broadway memorabilia, antique furniture and books that once filled the Arthur Laurents’ townhouse in Greenwich Village.

LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding. The sale will begin at 11 a.m. EDT.

Tony Award-winning Laurents wrote such enduring musicals as West Side Story, Gypsy, and Hallelujah, Baby! He created The Bird Cage in 1950 and wrote the novel The Turning Point, in 1997. In 1962, he directed I Can Get It For You Wholesale, the play that launched the career of Barbra Streisand.

Streisand has said of Laurents’ work that “he created people you care about because he cared about people.” Much of that sentiment is evident in the many types of items he collected.

Highlights of the auction include a collection of nine 18th and 19th century samplers. One by Hannah Merrill, states her birth date as May 8, 1789. Another says “This wrought in the year 1790.” Still another has the name Sarah Webster stitched into it along with the child’s age, 6 years, and the year, 1835.

This samplers may have inspired a collection of 11 20th century miniature needlepoints commemorating Arthur Laurents’ work. Approximately 4 inches square, the needlepoints bear a single symbol reference to Hallelujah, Baby!, West Side Story, A Clearing in the Woods, Home of the Brave, Gypsy, Invitation to March, The Enclave, Do I Hear a Waltz? The Time of the Cuckoo, Anyone Can Whistle and The Bird Cage.

For those hoping to buy a small keepsake, there are dozens of engraved silver and crystal gifts from cast members and celebrities, as well as awards. Additionally, there are ink and paper costume design sketches by Tony award winners Theoni Aldredge and Irene Sharaff. Also on the podium are Arthur’s leather bag and an early Royal typewriter presumed to be used in early writings.

Among the fine art offerings are a zoomorphic drawing by Yves Tanguey, paintings by Jess “Don” Bachardy and Ellen Adler (an accomplished artist and daughter of Stella Adler), Claude Venard, Ben Shahn, Bernard Perlin, Ernest Fiene, Saul Steinberg and Xiang Zhang.

A collection of books, including a copy of Gypsy, inscribed by Bernadette Peters, as well as other books like The Show Makers by Lawrence Thelen, The Gay Metropolis by Charles Kaiser, King of Broadway by Burton Stevenson and Meryle Secrest’s Shoot the Widow.

There is a first edition of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22, without the dust jacket and a rare Japanese Gypsy script book.

Furnishings from the Laurents estate include traditional American and English tables and chests. Two cock fight chairs and a fine butlers secretary. There is also a group of 20th century lighting and furniture, a large painted break front, an antique English mahogany center table and server from Asprey. Other Asprey items include two aubergine velvet benches on turned wood legs and a large decorative tufted ottoman. There is also a collection of art glass, Venetian furniture and vintage jewelry.

The auction comes on the heels of the premier of the Discovery Channel’s new reality TV series Final Offer on Thursday, May 31 at 10 p.m. EST. Billy Roland, co-founder of Roland Auctions, has a starring role in the show, along with dealers Jordan Tabach-Bank, Jacob Chait and Patrick Painter.

Hosted by Michael Kalish, the show is said to be “an intense and dramatic high-stakes face off.”

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – An auction packed with Chinese carvings and works of art, fine porcelain, artwork and decorative arts will be held June 23-24 by Elite Decorative Arts at the firm’s gallery located in the Quantum Town Center (1034 Gateway Blvd., Suites 106-108).

Internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com. Selling will start at 1 p.m. EDT both days.

The Saturday, June 23, session will feature over 300 lots of fine porcelain, artwork and decorative arts. An equal number of lots will change hands on Sunday, with a session dedicated to fine Chinese carvings and works of art.

Previews will be held Friday, June 22, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and on sale days from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The expected top lot of the sale is a rare and masterfully carved Chinese rhinoceros horn libation cup from the 17th or 18th century, 4 inches tall and fitted to a reticulated teakwood base. It has a presale estimate of $150,000-$250,000. The cup was offered at Elite Decorative Arts’ March 17-18 auction, but has been relisted in the upcoming sale because of nonpayment.

Chris Hayes of Elite Decorative Arts said the winning bidder from China placced the high bid of $270,000, but failed to make payment.

The rhinoceros horn libation cup is striking—finely relief carved as a wooded jungle and rendered in high relief to depict a village scene with trees and people working and resting. One side shows scholars climbing the side of a rock mountain, with many types of trees. The other side depicts a family at the base and a tall and leafy peony tree growing amongst rock.

Also offered June 24 will be several stunning fine carved red coral group figures, highly sought after by collectors. Two lots carry estimates of $40,000-$60,000. Both are fully relief carved group figures. One depicts two maidens with young girls, plus a phoenix with birds of paradise. The other is a massive hand-carved coral figure depicting Quan Yin, with four birds.

Two other red coral group figures are expected to bring $30,000-$40,000. One depicts Quan Yin, with deer, birds, bamboo trees and flowers. It is finely carved throughout and stands 6 3/4 inches tall, weighing 691 grams. The other depicts a maiden holding a lantern and a fan, with two children to her upper and a young girl under them. It is 8 3/4 inches tall and 1,370 grams.

Also selling at the June 24 session will be a Chinese Ming Dynasty olive glazed pottery vase having a raised design depicting dragons and flora throughout and six rings to the shoulder, with mask design (est. $12,000-$18,000), and a Chinese Cultural Revolution-era hand-carved polychromed ivory group figure of a woman and young child on a stool (est. $6,000-$8,000).

The June 23 session will be somewhat more free-wheeling with the star lots drawn from several different categories. One expected standout is a late 19th century Victorian-style standard grade burled walnut Wooton patent desk, with bronze hardware (est. $10,000-$15,000). The circa 1890 desk is 72 inches wide by 42 inches wide and has several letter slots and a letter box.

Artwork will feature a drawing on paper by James Abbott McNeil Whistler (American, 1834-1903), of a man and a young girl, 7 1/2 inches by 10 1/2 inches, framed and matted (est. $6,000-$8,000); and a photogravure by Robert Mapplethorpe (American, 1946-1989), titled Orchid, of an orchid on a black background, signed and dated, Edition No. 22/27 (est. $8,000-$10,000).

Also selling June 23 will be an 18K white gold and 2.53-carat diamond bridal ring set, an engagement ring featuring a modern brilliant cut round diamond of VS2 clarity and J color and weighing exactly 1.39 carats (est. $5,000-$10,000). On either side of the center stone is a .25-carat modern brilliant cut diamond. The size 7 ring has a written appraised value of $10,750.

NEW YORK – On Tuesday, June 12 an exciting selection of 74 important American and European paintings from the 16th through 20th centuries will be offered at Keno Auctions’ Manhattan office at 127 E. 69th St (between Park and Lexington avenues). The sale will begin at 10 a.m. EDT and will be the first distinct fine art sale for the auction house.

LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.

A public exhibition preceding the sale will be held June 8-12.

Lots presented in the June sale include some superb old master paintings, American paintings, 19th century paintings, Latin American paintings, European paintings, and postwar art from private collections that are fresh to the market and estimated to create an exciting buzz in the industry.

A fine range of work from such renowned artists as Milton Avery, Charles Demuth, Thomas Doughty, George Henry Hall, Hamilton Hamilton, David Johnson, John LaFarge, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Roberto Antonio (Echaurren) Matta, Jean Francois Raffaelli, Jean Paul Riopelle, Charles Marion Russell, William Trost Richards and Esteban Vicente will be offered.

One of the works offered has not been seen for more than 100 years.

“We are privileged to present for sale Morning, Fishing Boats at Anchor (est. $40,000-$80,000) by Hendrik Willem Mesdag (Dutch, 1831-1915) for which the proceeds of the sale are to benefit the Historic Park McCullough Association. The painting was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. John G. McCullough directly from the artist at the turn of the 20th century. Mesdag was the leader of the Hague School and this is a classic example of his work. This painting contains all the vital factors that the current art market treasures, namely outstanding quality, impressive size, excellent untouched original condition, freshness to the market and an important and distinguished provenance,” said Leigh Keno, president of the eponymous auction house.

A fine selection of early American works include David Johnson’s brilliant Sunset on the Unadilla, 1856, (est. $50,000-$80,000) and from a Southern collector, a William Trost Richards, from his rare 1866 Mount Desert Island, Maine (est. $40,000-$100,000) period. An important work by George Henry Hall, dated 1861, addresses the artist’s pacifist stance on the Civil War. A rare Luminist work, the breathtaking Sierras, (est. $20,000-$40,000) by Hamilton Hamilton, is arguably the artist’s best work to come to auction.

Two early Charles M. Russell works bring new light to the artist’s career, showing him as an effective history painter, in the depiction of The Burning of the Tonquin (est. $20,000-$40,000), and conversely as a painter of fantasy in the Wood Nymph with Rabbit (est. $15,000-$25,000).

The aesthetic movement is represented by two lovely John LaFarge works on paper, in original condition. A Jean Francois Raffaelli of a shoreline is characteristic of the artist’s mature style—lighter in color, but a broad brush, and small but strong energetic figure.

A distinguished Michigan estate is offering two early 20th century paintings by Ashcan artists George Luks—of street people huddled together—and Jerome Meyers of a playful Carousel (est. $12,000-$18,000); a freshly colored Charles Demuth watercolor of three figures at the beach, and a magic realist work by Aaron Bohrod Mother Earth (est. $6,000-$8,000) that addresses ecological issues as early as the 1960s.

Rounding out the sale are a number of fresh to the market 20th century pictures from an important California collector, including an noteworthy contemporary work Topologie de Illusion, 1990 (est. $50,000-$100,000); a large scale vivid, abstract painting by renowned Latin American artist Roberto Matta, which is sure to attract an international audience, and the up-and-comer Esteban Vicente’s On Space, (est. $30,000-$60,000) and a charming Milton Avery watercolor and gouache on black paper painted in 1930 entitled Beach Photographer (est. $20,000-$40,000).

Jean Paul Riopelle’s Folâtre (est. $80,000-$120,000) has all the energy affiliated with the postwar modernists. He created works of heavy impasto as well as the use of a palette knife; this work Folâtre is emblematic of what scholars and collectors consider his best period.

“I am thrilled to be conducting Keno Auction’s first stand-alone paintings sale, especially because it is the first sale we are going to be conducting at our headquarters,” said owner Leigh Keno. “We’ve achieved great results in the fine art area in our last several auctions and collectors have asked us to expand our offerings. We are accomplishing this with these wonderful pictures, most of which have not been in the marketplace for 20 years.”

Exhibition Previews will be Friday, June 8, 10 a.m.-8:00 p.m.; Saturday, June 9, 10 a.m.-6 p.m; Sunday, June 10, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Monday, June 11, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

FREDERICK, Md. – The city of Frederick, Md., was a hotbed of activity during the Civil War. Both Union and Confederate troops marched through the region, which was considered a major crossroads for transportation. To mark the sesquicentennial of the War Between the States, Mosby & Co. will conduct a May 26 specialty auction of important relics of the Civil War and other military engagements. The 519-lot sale — with Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com — will include both Confederate and Union uniforms, firearms and edged weapons, badges and hat ornaments, medical equipment, canteens and soldiers’ personal effects. Other militaria to be auctioned span a timeline from the American Revolutionary War through World War II.

The centerpiece of the Civil War section is a vast, single-owner collection from Texas and was amassed over four decades. “This is one of the more diverse Civil War collections I’ve seen,” said Keith Spurgeon, owner of Mosby & Co. “The collector did not focus on any one specific area.”

Among the varied Civil War offerings are an 1863 Richmond carbine made at the Confederate Armory in Virginia, an assortment of knives, pikes and lances; a Snowden of Philadelphia, surgeon’s kit, a framed set of Confederate CDVs, and numerous personal items carried to battle by soldiers. These articles include whiskey flasks, cups, shaving paraphernalia, tobacco, cartridge and cap boxes; belts and ammunition containers.

Civil War-era uniforms from both the North and South are entered in the sale. Standout lots include a Confederate frock coat and Zouave vest, jackets, a drummer boy’s coat and boots and many accessories, e.g., corps badges, hat ornaments, etc.

More than 50 swords, dating from around 1790 through 1949, await auction bidders. Noteworthy swords include an 18th/19th-century Katana and a very fine, cased presentation sword gifted in 1949 to West Point Academy by Mexico’s Secretary of Defense.

A special grouping to be apportioned into 15 lots consists of items pertaining to a Civil War soldier, Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (1834-1910), who served in Co. K, 51st Massachusetts Regiment. Gustavus Williams was a descendant of Rhode Island’s founder, Roger Williams, and his family has had a long and active history in New England. The archive of articles belonging to Sgt. Williams has passed down through successive generations and has never left the family till now. It includes Williams’ musket, commission papers, badges, uniform buttons, family photo albums, over 100 letters written home to his wife, and even the Bible he took with him to war.

“This extraordinary archive comes straight from the family. The provenance is impeccable,” Spurgeon said.

Thirty to 40 medals are included in the sale, including a rare Mexican-American War (1846-48) veteran’s medal. “The Mexican-American War made many Civil War generals famous – including Robert E. Lee – since it was the first war they fought in,” said Spurgeon. Additional medals include a circa-1840 French Legion d’Honneur medal from the July Monarchy (La Monarchie de Juillet) period, medals from World War I and II, and a solid gold GAR medal designed by prestigious Chicago jewelers Juergens & Andersen, in its original presentation case.

Around 35 posters from the First and Second World Wars will cross the auction block. Some are recruitment posters; others promote savings bonds or serve to boost public morale. Most are mounted and framed.

Among the many other interesting pieces in the sale are movie-prop hats and accessories from Civil War-themed movies, including the kepi and epaulets Matthew Broderick wore in his acclaimed role as Capt. Robert Gould Shaw in the 1989 film Glory [accompanied by photo of Broderick wearing the articles].

Spurgeon said interest in militaria has never waned. “That’s because there has never been a lack of interest in military history, especially the Civil War. It fascinates us,” he said. “Books are still being written about it, 150 years later, and it’s still being discussed – the tactics, the mistakes, and the way it affected America. Collectors clamor for relics of the Civil War because these objects are its only survivors.”

Mosby & Co.’s Civil War & Militaria Auction will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2012 commencing at 10 a.m. Eastern Time at the company’s gallery at 5714-A Industry Lane, Frederick, MD 21704.

All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers.com. For additional information, call 240-629-8139 or e-mail keith@mosbyauctions.com.

TEHACHAPI, Calif. – California’s Government Auction is rolling out the red carpet for bidders at its Sunday, May 27 auction of luxury goods, which is led by an array of top-notch timepieces, coveted gold coins and exquisite jewels. The auction will begin at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time (6:30 a.m. Pacific Time) and is structured as an absentee, phone and Internet auction, with Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com.

“Anyone who has ever dreamed of owning a Rolex watch will have an excellent opportunity to fulfill that wish at our May 27 event,” said Chris Budge, of Government Auction’s Marketing department. “We will be auctioning a collection of high-end watches that includes designs by Rolex, as well as Cartier and Bvlgari. Bidding will start as low as $2 on most items.”

One of the wristwatch highlights is Lot 9A, an impressive pre-owned 1985 Rolex men’s stainless steel and gold Model No. 15053 (est. $3,225-$4,300). Known to timepiece collectors as an Oyster Perpetual Date, the watch retains all its original parts, including the face, band and dial. It features an 18K yellow gold and stainless steel bracelet with a champagne dial and 18K yellow gold index markers. “This watch is considered a classic — a statement piece meant to be worn and enjoyed for a lifetime,” said Budge.

Women have not been left out of the Rolex stakes by any means. Lot 17A in Government Auction’s sale is a 1997 Rolex women’s Oyster Model No. 67103, composed of stainless steel and gold. A symbol of quiet but impeccable taste, this attractive link-bracelet watch could bring $2,775-$3,700 at auction.

For centuries, rubies have fascinated jewelry lovers. They’re found in the collections of virtually every crowned head, and their value has only increased as mines have closed. Lot 202 in the May 27 auction, a dazzling pendant-drop necklace, combines classical design with 74 carats of rubies and 5 carats of diamonds, all in a setting of lustrous 14K yellow gold. The necklace’s linked floret clusters feature 29 natural, chevron-shape rubies surrounded by diamonds. Each ruby measures approximately 9mm by 7mm. The necklace has a retail replacement value of $41,350.

Another major draw in the May 27 auction event is the select offering of gold coins. Lot 3, an 1850 $20 U.S Liberty Head gold coin known as a “Double Eagle” was minted at the height of the gold rush. Of all the gold coins minted prior to 1907, the Double Eagle had the highest gold content. The coin to be auctioned represents the first year of production for the $20 Double Eagle of this particular design, which ended its run in 1907. The coin features the Liberty head surrounded by 13 stars on the front and is stamped “Twenty D” on the reverse side of the coin.

“The $20 Double Eagle is an elusive coin and is quite rare. It is sure to attract some major coin experts and collectors,” said Paul Sabesky, Government Auction’s chief auctioneer.

Additional numismatic highlights include an 1884CC United States Morgan silver dollar and a 1911 $2.5 U.S. Indian Head gold coin. And once acquired, where better to keep one’s valuable coins than in an antique nickel-plated Model 5 National cash register? Entered as lot 42, this rare cash register is of the tall, narrow style used in early 20th-century candy stores. It is topped by a handsome, cobalt blue and white marquee that reads: “This Registers the amount of your Purchase.” The lot is estimated at $7,500-$15,000.

Government Auction’s Sunday, May 27, 2012 auction event will commence at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time/9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. For additional information on any lot in the sale, call Debbie on 661-823-1543 or e-mail info@governmentauction.com.

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Michaan’s Auctions has drawn from two departments to forge a one-of-a kind sale. Modern artisan furniture will be combined with American and European furniture and decorations, creating an auction designed to pique the interest of a multitude of buyers.

LiveAuctionheers.com will provide Internet live bidder on the more than 225 lots. The auction will include a large selection of Tiffany Studios, Meissen and Art Nouveau styles to choose from.

Modern furniture will feature pieces from names such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Arthur Umanoff, George Nelson, Hans Wegner, Paul Laszlo and Finn Juhl. The auction will be held on June 8 at 10 a.m. PDT in Michaan’s Auctions main gallery with previews beginning on June 1.

Two different, yet equally exceptional pieces from Tiffany Studios are among the highlighted lots for sale. A Tiffany Studios Spider lamp is beautiful in its dark accents and simple, angular, clean design (lot 1123, estimate: $30,000-$50,000). In contrast is lot 1125, a Tiffany Studios poinsettia Favrile glass and bronze table lamp. Flowers form a continuous design encircle the shade, blooming in lovely jewel tones. The graceful, ornate body features three cylindrical feet that add a delightful quality to the piece ($30,000-$40,000). Both lamps and their shades are stamped with authentic Tiffany Studio marks.

Another beautiful decorative item for sale lies in a Gallé cameo glass vase. The vase depicts a tranquil landscape of a forest framing a mountain and lake. The pilgrim form vase is fashioned in gray colored glass with a shade variation that transitions from pale green to blue. The color palette of the scene is wonderfully complementary and includes forest green, brown, purple, black and blue. The signed vase measures approximately 19 inches in height and is being offered as lot 1129 with an estimate of $7,000-$9,000.

A saxophone identified as belonging to jazz immortal Charlie Parker is being offered as lot 1185 ($30,000-$35,000). Jazz historian Bob Dietsche has researched details in the interesting saga of the Parker saxophone, with all facts pointing to the validity of Parker’s ownership of it.

A wide variety of clocks will be offered in the sale including a French champleve enamel gilt bronze mantel clock (lot 1084, $12,000-$15,000). The clock features depictions of amorini and painted muses as well as numerous other desirable design elements. A band of paste diamonds frame the dial and a pendulum decorated with a star adorns the early 20th century clock, which measures 16 1/2 x 9 3/4 x 6 inches.

The auction’s modern and contemporary furniture was designed by prominent American, Danish, Italian and Swedish artisans. An outstanding lot sure to draw strong collector interest lies in a rare Frank Lloyd Wright table and six chairs (lot 1200, $80,000-$100,000). Produced in 1903, the set is thought to be one of only two made. Wright was specifically sought out to commission the prototype, which ended up in the possession of a fortunate consignor whose grandfather was a furniture manufacturer. Genius in its simplicity and streamlined design, the Wright lot should entice intense bidder competition.

Michaan’s Auctions is also offering an outstanding Hans Wegner old growth teak draw leaf table purchased in Copenhagen in 1957 as lot 1249 ($1,500-$2,000). Yet another rare find is seen in a Finn Juhl Chieftains oak chair circa 1949 (lot 1248, $3,000-$6,000). Also highlighted are two Knoll manufactured lots. A Mies van der Rohe Barcelona daybed is being offered as lot 1205 and is in excellent condition. The bed, estimated at $2,000-$4,000, boasts a solid teak frame, brown leather upholstery and chrome legs. It was designed in 1929. A Knoll Saarinen Tulip table is also available, conservatively estimated at $300-500.

Rounding out the sale is a grouping of 16 Arthur Umanoff wood serving pieces, a J. Risley three-piece wrought iron set consisting of a chair, ottoman and side table, a Satterini rug and a Peter Huidt leather sofa.

LOS ANGELES – Ancient Resource LLC is proud to present an exciting array of Ancient Art in its June 2nd auction. Ancient Resource brings over 400 lots of well-provenanced goods to the collecting community, with Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com. Cultures represented in this auction range from the exceptionally rare Elamite, through Egyptian Greek and Roman, to all of the diverse peoples of the New World.

The market for Antiquities continues to soar, as fine pieces fall into the category of tangible assets, and according to some, are a great hedge against inflation and the declining dollar. Provenance is important in this category, and the bulk of Ancient Resource’s selection comes from select English collections assembled at the end of the Grand Tour period. A notable exception is a group of cylinder and stamp seals from the personal collection of Edgar Banks. Aspects of the Banks collection are seen in almost every major museum in the United States. His life story formed the basis of the Indiana Jones film series.

Highlights from the June 2 sale include:

Lot 113 – Part of an Elamite brick of Untash-Napirisha, c. 1255 – 1235 BC, the front with six partial lines of cuneiform script praising the king and referring to the ziggurat he constructed as a sanctuary for the god Inshushinak. Nice clear inscription. Ex Chester English, acquired in the 1930s.

Lot 120 – A rare strip of linen with two lines from the “Book of the Dead” in Hieratic script, Greco-Roman, c. 2nd Century BC/AD, neatly written and professionally framed under glass. Linen strip measures 28″ (70.1 cm) in length; frame measures 37″ x 13″ (181.2 x 33 cm). Ex Charles Ryan collection.

Lot 337 – A fragment of a Vera Cruz basalt Hatcha, AD 700 – 900, with a feline head seen in profile, mouth agape. The piece is nicely mounted on a tall base. 7″ x 8″ (17.8 x 20.3 cm). Ex Midwest collection.

According to company owner Gabriel Vandervort, the June 2 auction is already breaking records for bidder registration. For additional information, e-mail ancientresourceauctions@yahoo.com.
