SARASOTA, Fla. – Sidney Hutter (b. 1954-) is a leading member of the American Art Glass movement, having singlehandedly changed how people approach and use laminated glass in sculptural designs. Heavily geometric, Hutter’s sculptures are amplified and brought to life by his innovative and often stunning use of light.

He began his education at Illinois State University as a sociology major in college and soon drifted towards crafts, landing in the glass-blowing lab, where he spent the rest of his undergraduate career. He opted to pursue a post-graduate degree at the Massachusetts College of Art, but early in his second term, the glass-blowing studio was destroyed by fire. This caused Hutter to look at other ways of working with glass, and in the process, he invented the plate-glass vase in 1979. This landmark creation of his has now evolved into more than two dozen designs that are highly sought after by glass collectors worldwide.

Featured in Habatat Galleries’ 39th Masterworks Auction on Thursday, February 1 is Hutter’s White House Cubic Heart Vase #14. The stunning piece dates to 1997 and measures 17.5 by 13.5 by 13in. It exemplifies Hutter’s use of cut plate glass stacked geometrically, employing embedded pigments in various glass elements to produce highly dramatic effects. Habatat states that it has been representing Hutter since the mid-1980s and considers this piece “one of the artist’s finest works.” It carries an estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

LONDON – Bonhams is selling the library of the London antiquarian book dealer and collector Robin De Beaumont (1926-2023) in an online auction that closes on January 31. The collection tells the story of book production in the Victorian and Edwardian era with the occasional eclectic addition.

De Beaumont, a specialist in 19th-century bindings and illustrated books in particular, began his professional life in the book trade in 1978, when Stanley Gibbons purchased his collection and hired him to sell it in a newly established book department. Henceforth a fulltime dealer, he amassed a second library of more than 400 books, prints, illustrations and woodblocks that he donated to the British Museum in 1992.

During his career De Beaumont was occasionally accused of owning a time machine. Most pieces from this, his third collection, are in exceptional condition or otherwise extremely rare.

Pictured here is a copy of The Pretty Women of Paris, a privately printed 1883 guide that rates and reviews 240 fin-de-siècle Parisian sex workers. Offered with a 1996 reprint that contains a preface by de Beaumont, the lot is estimated at £2,000-£3,000 ($2,550-$3,825).

LONDON – This design, known as Senlis and listed in the catalogue raisonné as model 962, is one of only two glass vases created by René Lalique to incorporate bronze handles. Made circa 1925 in the archaeological revival style, the bifurcated handles are modeled as branches of foliage and fruits against a bulbous body of smoky gray glass. It takes its name from the northern French town where the monarchs of the early French dynasties lived.

The vase is one of the highlights of a private collection of Lalique glass that will be offered at Lyon & Turnbull in London on Thursday, February 8. It has an estimate of £20,000-£30,000 ($25,525-$38,290).

The other Lalique vase to incorporate bronze handles is model 961, known as Cluny. This design, also around 10in (25cm) high with patinated mask handles and a green-gray glass bowl, is also represented in the 137-lot collection. It is estimated at £60,000-£80,000.

BELLPORT, N.Y. – Largely forgotten today, Dondi was a daily comic strip which, at its peak, appeared in more than 100 newspapers throughout the United States. The strip focused on a war orphan nicknamed “Dandy” by GIs in postwar Italy after the fall of the Axis. One particular GI decides to bring the child back to the States after his deployment has ended, and by this time, the child, misunderstanding English, believes his new name to be “Dondi.”

The character and strip were launched by the creative team of writer Gus Edson and illustrator Irwin Hasen in 1954. Edson had previously been a sports cartoonist for various papers and syndicates in New York, and in 1936, after the death of creator Sidney Smith, took over The Gumps, then a hugely popular strip featuring, among others, Andy Gump. Edson would continue The Gumps until 1959.

Hasan bounced around the New York comic book scene in the 1940s, working variously on The Green Hornet and Wonder Woman in small roles and eventually doing a strip based on the popular radio program The Goldbergs. It wasn’t until he went on a USO tour of Western Germany and met the inventive (but generally inebriated) Edson that his fortunes would turn. Soon after his arrival back in New York, Hasen received a letter from Edson with a sample illustration of his idea for a war orphan comic strip lead.

Edson would pass away in 1966 and be replaced by Bob Oksner, who would remain with Hasen until the strip ended in 1986, when it was appearing in only 35 papers.

Thos. Cornell Galleries has what appears to be two original pen-and-ink Dondi Sunday strips dating to 1978, offered along with some additional sketch illustrations by Hasen. The strips are included in the Mid-Winter Estate Auction scheduled for Saturday, January 27, and carry an estimate of just $500-$800.

EAST MORICHES, N.Y. – Goudji (b. 1941-) is one of the world’s most revered artisans working in metal. His pieces have been presented as state gifts by numerous presidents of the French Republic, and his particular emphasis on liturgical art for Catholic churches throughout France – including Notre Dame de Paris – has led to the creation of one of the most important liturgical collections in his adopted country.

Born to professional parents in Soviet Georgia, Goudji attended art school in the Georgian capital of Tblisi and later relocated to Moscow, where he initially dreamed of becoming a sculptor. However, his 1969 marriage to an employee of the French Embassy in Moscow would change the course of his life. After personal intervention by French President Georges Pompidou, the Soviet government granted Goudji an exit visa to emigrate to France, where he would eventually become a naturalized citizen in 1978.

There, Goudji began to create jewelry and other fine objects for various galleries. As he began to focus on metalwork, his entire canon would shift toward world-class objets d’art that were embraced by dealers and galleries throughout the country. His works range from ceremonial swords to fine dining wares.

This sterling silver ewer (also known as an aquamanile) represents a cross between Goudji’s civil and liturgical designs. Ewers have been used for centuries by Roman Catholic priests for the washing of hands or feet as part of the celebration of Mass (hence, ‘aqua’ and ‘manos,’ or aquamanile). Such ewers were often fashioned in animal or human forms, and the pictured Goudji piece follows this tradition with an animal spout design. Though this example has minor dents and scratches, it comes to market with a $3,000-$5,000 estimate at South Bay Auctions on Wednesday, January 31.
