Islamic & Indian Art
Welcome to the Summer 2026 edition of our Islamic & Indian Art auction on Wednesday 10 June, featuring an exceptional selection of Islamic manuscripts, Ottoman works of art, Persian ceramics, Gandharan sculpture, and Indian paintings. Among the highlights is an important group of early Qur?anic and literary manuscripts in kufic and maghribi scripts (lots 1 to 5), alongside a distinguished collection of Ottoman art, including a striking Iznik dish (lot 12) and several rare objects associated with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. The Persian section features notable Safavid works, including rare cuerda-seca tile panels depicting animals and beautifully preserved Resht embroidered textiles. The Indian art section includes an important portrait of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (lot 74), depicting the ruler in later life, as well as an impressive equestrian portrait of Emperor Muhammad Azam Shah mounted on a richly caparisoned palomino (lot 79). Another standout is a detailed painting of the famed Lake Palace in Udaipur, once described as ?a dream floating on Lake Pichola?, rendered with extraordinary architectural precision and atmosphere (lot 117). The sale also includes works from several notable private collections, including paintings formerly owned by the celebrated scholar Stuart Cary Welch, whose handwritten notes on the reverse of certain works offer fascinating insight into his connoisseurship (lots 126 to 133). A further private collection from Aberdeenshire brings together works evocative of colonial India, including paintings associated with Shaykh Muhammad Amir of Karraya alongside works by Thomas Daniell, Emily Eden and C.G.
