Silver & Objets de Vertu
Silver highlights from our September 2024 Silver & Objets de Vertu auction include a pair of 1920s muffin dishes, for the wedding of H.R.H. The Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood by Garrard, and a pair of candlesticks by the renowned candlestick maker Ebenezer Coker. Also featured in the sale is a collection of Trefid spoons, some of which feature Channel Island maker marks as well as one from the English provincial centre of Great Yarmouth.

Books & Manuscripts
Our September 2024 Books & Manuscripts auction brings the best of Scotland with an extremely rare, first ?Kilmarnock? edition of Robert Burns Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, 1786. This is accompanied in the sale by an original manuscript copy of the Scottish National Covenant, 1638-9, and a beautifully presented collection of books from a Scottish gentleman?s library, collected in the early 20th century and now being offered for sale after around 100 years with the family. Scientific interest features strongly, with John Snow?s seminal epidemiological work, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera, leading the section, followed by an impressive selection of natural history and botanical works. In travel and topography, an extremely rare true first edition of John Webber's spectacular suite of views from Cook's third and final voyage, entitled Views in the South Seas, is expected to draw a great deal of interest, being the only complete copy of the first edition ever offered at auction, depicting scenes in New Zealand, Macao, Krakatoa, Kamchatka, Tahiti, Moorea, and Pulo Condore in what is now Vietnam. Viewing in Broadside, Edinburgh Viewing will begin on Monday 16th September in our rare Books department at Broadside in the Canonmills area of Edinburgh.
A Taste for Art
A Taste for Art : Selected Works from The Paisley Art Institute Collection. This September we will offer a selection of paintings by leading Scottish and European artists on behalf of the Paisley Art Institute as a major part of an ongoing effort to secure the future of the organisation. A Taste for Art : Selected Works from the Paisley Art Institute Collection will feature 97 works, selected by the team at the Paisley Art Institute from their 450-strong collection of artworks. Highlights will include works by artists such as Sir John Lavery, F.C.B. Cadell, Sir James Guthrie, Sir Joseph Noel Paton, E.A. Hornel, George Henry and E.A. Walton. Paisley Art Institute has been at the forefront of promoting and supporting Scottish artists? work since 1876. It is a lively artists collective run by artists and art lovers which continues to be focused on its original aims including its annual large-scale exhibition for contemporary artists, now in its 135th year.
