NEW YORK — An Ivan Da Silva Bruhns rug from the estate of Sire Records founder and art collector Seymour Stein outperformed expectations at Capsule Auctions’ Art & Design event on September 27. The complete auction results are available for review at LiveAuctioneers.

Bruhns (1881-1980) was a French-Brazilian artist who was largely self-taught in the art of rug-making, disassembling Oriental examples to study the methods of hand-knotting that he would ultimately incorporate into his designs.

This rug, measuring roughly 3ft by 5ft, was estimated at $5,000-$8,000 but ultimately hammered at $24,000 ($31,200 with buyer’s premium) after dozens of bids from the floor and the internet.

Well cared-for lamps from Tiffany Studios are always strong performers, as Capsule bidders demonstrated with their pursuit of a 10-light Lily table lamp. Estimated at $5,000-$7,000, it sold for a respectable $11,500 ($14,950 with buyer’s premium) after a lengthy bidding battle.

Founded in 1898 and still family-run, Gracie Studio is an American manufacturer of wallpaper and fine furniture with a focus on nature – such as plants or vines incorporated into the designs. Two chinoiserie folding screens with garden scenes sold well above their estimates of $400-$600, hitting $3,800 ($4,940 with buyer’s premium) and $3,600 ($4,680 with buyer’s premium), respectively.

Interestingly, one of the top lots of the sale, a Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Viasge et Hibou (A.R. 407) owl earthenware vase from his Madoura partnership, passed after not meeting the reserve. It had been estimated at $25,000-$30,000.

NEW YORK — A vase made during the Pablo Picasso-Madoura ceramic works partnership in Vallauris, France comes to market at Capsule Auctions‘ Art and Design auction on Wednesday, September 27. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Picasso (1881-1973) first discovered Madoura pottery during a 1946 art exhibition in Vallauris. He met the owners, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, who invited him to their facility. Before long, a partnership bloomed and Picasso ceramics streamed out of Madoura — by some estimates, more than 9,000 pieces.

So desirable are Picasso-Madoura ceramics that a Christie’s South Kensington sale in 2012 brought an incredible $12,584,141 from just 500-odd lots that came directly from the Madoura works.

Capsule’s example features Picasso’s trademark owl design, is titled Viasge et Hibou (Face and Owl), is marked “Edition Picasso / Madoura” and carries number 114 from a 200-piece edition. Standing 9.5in in height and with provenance from a collection at The Beekman, New York, it has an estimate of $25,000-$30,000.

Fresh from an East Hampton collection is a circa-1910 Tiffany Studios 10-light Lily table lamp. Made with favrile glass and bronze, its eight shades are marked “L.C.T. Favrile” and the base is impressed “TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/381.” It is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

High-style Modernism is also a part of the Capsule sale. A pair of Tommi Parzinger brass table lamps with linen shades in generally good condition is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

NEW YORK — A finely curated collection of contemporary Latin American art in a wide range of formats comes to the block at Capsule Auctions on Thursday, September 14. The sale is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Most of the items in the sale come from the collection of Graciela Kartofel, a noted art historian, writer, and curator. Kartofel taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she created the Chair of Modern and Contemporary Art in Latin America. A lifetime advocate for contemporary Latin American art, Kartofel’s collection reflects the incredible variety and creativity of this category.

One of the top lots in the sale is a bronze by Felipe Castañeda (b. 1933-), Dormida Vestida, dated 2000. Measuring 4.5 by 13.75 by 7in, the figure of a sleeping woman is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Mexican painter Rodolfo Morales (1925-2001) is known for surrealistic paintings with elements of magic realism. The sale includes three Morales works, including Untitled (Four Skulls), a mixed media (paper and fabric) collage measuring 13 by 19in. The colorful piece has an estimate of $1,000-$2,000.

One of Argentina’s pioneers in Geometric Abstraction, Carlos Silva (1930-1987) was self taught and left an important art world legacy upon his passing. The sale includes two lots in his trademark style, including a signed serigraph, Tres, measuring 25.75 by 18.75in. The print is estimated at $400-$600.

German by birth, Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990) studied in Europe before emigrating to Mexico in 1949, where he helped build the burgeoning Latin American art movement. Known for his colorful public art projects, Goeritz’s works can still be seen today throughout Mexico. One such installation, Torres de Satélite, located in the Ciudad Satélite district of Naucalpan, is the inspiration for this 1970 serigraph. It is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

NEW YORK – In several of its recent previous sales, Capsule Auctions has offered property from the estate of the American fashion designer Geoffrey Beene (1924-2004). Its LX: Fashion, Art and Estates sale, set for Thursday, September 7, will provide 60 additional Beene lots, the proceeds of which will benefit the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Seven among the dozens of Beene-related lots are devoted to fashion illustrations by Jesper Nyeboe, who was also known as Sven Jesper Nyeboe (1944-1989). Born in Denmark, he earned a master’s degree in art history from the University of Copenhagen and served as an assistant curator in the department of prints and drawings at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Copenhagen before bagging the art-institutional life and heading to Manhattan to find a place in the fashion industry.

He worked for Anne Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt and briefly ran an eponymous label in the late 1970s, but he spent the bulk of his career with Beene, from 1968-1976 and also from 1980-1987. His illustrations benefit from his academic knowledge and his curatorial experience, ranging beyond the standard image of a dress on a model on a blank background (though he could, and did, render such drawings) to create images with colored backdrops and even landscapes.

Estimates for the Jesper Nyeboe lots range from $300-$500 up to $1,500-$2,500 for a 57-illustration lot that contains a drawing with a well-realized outdoor scene.

NEW YORK — Items from the estate of Albert Bela Bauer, former city architect for New York, give an interesting backstory to Capsule Auctions‘ LX: Fashion, Art and Estates event on Thursday, September 7, with bidding available at LiveAuctioneers.

A native of Hungary, Bauer (1899-1998) came to the United States in 1924 as a licensed architect and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York. He entered the civil service in 1936 and by 1939 had been appointed the city architect of New York. In this position, he oversaw the design and construction of government buildings throughout the metropolis, including the Brutalist Police Headquarters at 1 Police Plaza.

One of Bauer’s most notable achievements was his insistence that new government buildings contain artworks, leading Mayor John V. Lindsay to honor him as an outstanding civil servant. Bauer was ultimately made a fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

The items in this sale are from the estate of his partner, Tomasso Lepore, conveyed to him upon Bauer’s death. The artworks created by Bauer stand in stark contrast to his architectural designs and suggest a deeper and wider artistic sense.

This charming oil on canvas, untitled but called Pink House, suggests a fond getaway in happier days. It is estimated at $300-$500.

Still Life with Pears, Apples, and Orange is another fine example of Bauer’s artistic talent, which has an estimate of $200-$400.

Dated 1977 and created in the immediate years after his 1969 retirement, Still Life with Red Roses is a colorful study. It is estimated at $200-$400.
