NEW YORK — A finely curated collection of contemporary Latin American art in a wide range of formats comes to the block at Capsule Auctions on Thursday, September 14. The sale is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Most of the items in the sale come from the collection of Graciela Kartofel, a noted art historian, writer, and curator. Kartofel taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she created the Chair of Modern and Contemporary Art in Latin America. A lifetime advocate for contemporary Latin American art, Kartofel’s collection reflects the incredible variety and creativity of this category.

One of the top lots in the sale is a bronze by Felipe Castañeda (b. 1933-), Dormida Vestida, dated 2000. Measuring 4.5 by 13.75 by 7in, the figure of a sleeping woman is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Mexican painter Rodolfo Morales (1925-2001) is known for surrealistic paintings with elements of magic realism. The sale includes three Morales works, including Untitled (Four Skulls), a mixed media (paper and fabric) collage measuring 13 by 19in. The colorful piece has an estimate of $1,000-$2,000.

One of Argentina’s pioneers in Geometric Abstraction, Carlos Silva (1930-1987) was self taught and left an important art world legacy upon his passing. The sale includes two lots in his trademark style, including a signed serigraph, Tres, measuring 25.75 by 18.75in. The print is estimated at $400-$600.

German by birth, Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990) studied in Europe before emigrating to Mexico in 1949, where he helped build the burgeoning Latin American art movement. Known for his colorful public art projects, Goeritz’s works can still be seen today throughout Mexico. One such installation, Torres de Satélite, located in the Ciudad Satélite district of Naucalpan, is the inspiration for this 1970 serigraph. It is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.
