LESLIE, Mich. — Billed as “the largest assortment of cuckoo clocks, parts, and related items you will EVER see” by Epic Auctions and Estate Sales, the August 19 sale sounded off in fine fashion, delivering “epic” results for the consignor.

Thought to have originated in the Black Forest area of Bavaria, Germany, cuckoo clocks, with their distinctive hourly bird calls, have been popular since the 19th century. In addition, the clocks’ dark, hand-carved cases were made in an amazing array of variations. This single-owner collection of almost 400 lots saw active bidding through LiveAuctioneers.

The highest-selling lot was an Auerhahn motif Beha movement cuckoo clock measuring almost 24in in height. It hammered for $2,900 ($3,695 with buyers premium) after fierce bidding between the floor and internet buyers.

The next-highest lot wasn’t even functional, but its perceived value drove bidders to a final hammer of $1,900 ($2,375 with buyers premium). The 8-day Fusee hunter motif cuckoo clock parts lot ultimately sold to an internet bidder.

A German Baroque carved cuckoo clock with Philipp Haas Sohn movement sold in a single bid for $1,300 ($1,625 with buyers premium).
