PHILADELPHIA — Freeman’s September 21 Books and Manuscripts auction, the inaugural sale of the auction house’s fall 2022 season, will be led by an extremely rare first edition of New Englands First Fruits, a 1643 account of Puritan evangelization in New England. The first copy to be offered at auction in more than 20 years, the book, estimated at $20,000-$30,000, features the first printed mention of Harvard College. Equally alluring is a first edition of L. Frank Baum’s most famous book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, estimated at $8,000-$12,000. With works by Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, James Fenimore Cooper and Joseph Conrad, the Books and Manuscripts sale offers a great selection for buyers at all stages of collecting. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
