GENESEO, N.Y. — An interesting selection of art, antiques, advertising and vintage fire memorabilia came together at Cottone Auctions for its Art & Antiques two-day sale on November 29 and November 30. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Pandora, an oil on canvas by Charles Allan Winter (1869-1942), was the surprise winner for Cottone. Winter is remembered for his work with Elbert Hubbard’s Roycrofter movement, having illustrated many of Hubbard’s Little Sermons in Cosmopolitan magazine. His style became aligned with the Arts & Crafts movement for its refined and harmonious beauty. With a long and historic succession of documented exhibitions going back to 1909, Pandora would eventually find a home at the Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York upon its opening in 1940, just two years before the artist’s death. Estimated at $8,000-$12,000, Pandora received dozens of bids, pushing it to a final hammer of $95,000, or $118,750 with buyer’s premium.

Expected to do well, the Duffner & Kimberly Poppy floor lamp was another star performer, selling for $65,000 ($81,250 with buyer’s premium) against a $30,000-$50,000 presale estimate. The Poppy is regarded as one of the finest and most highly sought-after lamps produced by Duffner & Kimberly.

A surprise lot was the Canandaigua Beer-Ale cab light by Gillco. Designed to glow on dimly-lit tavern barbacks, the Gillcos are known as ‘cab lights’ because of their resemblance to then-contemporary roof-top signs on hacks. Gillcos are coveted by today’s collectors, as demonstrated by the bidding for this one blowing past the $500-$800 estimate to land at $12,500 ($15,625 with buyer’s premium). Gillco began issuing cab lights in 1936 and stopped in 1940 due to the high cost of production. The company would continue until 1959 when their assets were sold off. Today, it is best remembered by breweriana collectors.

A ceremonial parade fire hat marked for the United States Fire Company surprised buyers with a $10,500 hammer ($13,125 with buyer’s premium). The stunning artwork on the circa-1850 hat is attributed to David Bustill Bowser (1820-1900), an African American freeman and illustrator. The lot had been estimated at $2,000-$4,000.
