Estate of ‘Shaft’ star Richard Roundtree shines at GWS March 30

Richard Roundtree-owned 'Shaft' hand-embellished print, estimated at $300-$500 at GWS.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. – Richard Roundtree (1942-2023) started acting in 1963 and had many forgettable roles in TV commercials and for print advertising. That is, until producer Joel Freeman took note of him in late 1970 and cast him in what would be the first of several Shaft ‘blaxploitation’ action films that would forever change the way black leading men would be portrayed in Hollywood.

Roundtree’s heirs have decided to send his personal collection from a lifetime in Hollywood to market at GWS Auctions. More than 130 Roundtree lots – from guns to movie artifacts to artwork to baseball memorabilia – join other Hollywood relics now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Roundtree’s importance to the then-new blaxploitation genre of filmmaking cannot be understated. The Black Panther Party is credited with raising cultural awareness for providing heroic depictions of black men and women, rather than the more traditional Hollywood portrayals. The NAACP was not amused, however, coining the portmanteau from ‘black exploitation’ – in short, targeting black moviegoers with stereotypical depictions of street violence and drug use.

Shaft was far more than that, however. Released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1971, it was the first blaxploitation film from a major studio and provided a truly heroic lead. Roundtree would benefit from numerous sequels in the 1970s, a TV adaptation that lasted for two years, and revivals in the 2000s. Much of the collection comes from this latter period.

Roundtree was both neighbors and friends with iconic African American pro football player and fine artist Ernie Barnes (1938-2009). At one point, Roundtree had two Barnes originals in his collection, but they went to market prior to the actor’s death, with one achieving $151,000 in 2022. The surviving collection includes seven signed and numbered prints, led by In The Beginning, which GWS estimates at $6,500-$7,000. Numbered 346 from an edition of 750, the image reflects Barnes’ unique ability to portray movement. The Comedian, another Barnes print, is similarly estimated.

From the 2000 revival of Shaft, this time starring Samuel L. Jackson with Roundtree potraying his uncle, comes this crew jacket. It has direct provenance to the estate and is estimated at $2,250-$2,750. Four director’s chair seat back rests embroidered for Roundtree from various productions are together estimated at $2,000-$2,500.

Finally, a 16-by-11in screen print of a Pop Art version of Roundtree’s John Shaft character is affordably estimated at $300-$500. It is signed by the otherwise anonymous artist Jones and is certified to have hung in Roundtree’s Los Angeles home.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. — A 72-lot trove of Elvis Presley-related and -owned items is the lead group of consignments in GWS AuctionsArtifacts of Hollywood and Music sale on Saturday, December 2. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was legendary for his loyalty, often manifested through the thousands of items he gave to those around him, particularly those in his inner circle of the so-called “Memphis Mafia.” In the early 1970s, after the release of the Bachman Turner Overdrive single Takin’ Care of Business, Elvis adopted the phrase and modified it to Taking Care of Business in a Flash, symbolized by a logo featuring the letters TCB and a lightning bolt. Elvis had necklaces made with the design, and awarded them to those who had gained his favor.

Elvis gave this necklace to Denver Police Department officer Ron Pietrafeso, whom he had befriended while performing in the Mile High City in 1969. Though initially without diamonds, Elvis later decided Pietrafeso had “earned” the precious stones, and instructed road manager Joe Esposito to have it upgraded with one carat’s worth affixed to the letters. This lot is one of only seven known to be outfitted with diamonds, and comes with letters of authenticity from Pietrafeso and Priscilla Presley. It is estimated at $200,000-$225,000, and is the top lot in the sale.

Michael Jackson (1958-2009) memorabilia continues to climb in popularity, despite there being precious little of it in the market. This rehearsal-worn glove festooned with crystals from Austrian glass cutters Swarovski was designed to generate spectacular lighting effects when targeted with stage illumination, dazzling the audience. It was created for Jackson prior to his embarking on his third and final world tour, HIStory, in 1996-1997. It carries an estimate of $50,000-$55,000.

William Wyler’s 1959 biblical epic Ben Hur was a huge blockbuster and helped cement Charlton Heston’s (1923-2008) career as a box office winner. Playing the leading role of Judah Ben Hur, Heston’s portrayal of the Jewish prince turned Roman slave had more than 100 costume designers working around the clock to clothe some 10,000 cast members and extras. Western Costume created this caftan worn by Heston in the production, and it comes with a certificate of authenticity from Profiles in History, the now-shuttered house that drove several world records for Hollywood memorabilia. The costume is estimated at $20,000-$23,000.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. – The original working lyrics for Heartbreak Hotel carry an estimate of $200,000-$220,000 at GWS Auctions’ sale titled Artifacts of Hollywood & Music on Saturday, August 26. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers. This small piece of music history, signed by songwriters Mae Boren Axton and Tommy Durden, is dated October 1955, three months before Elvis Presley recorded the song.

Mae Boren Axton, a high school teacher with a background in musical promotion, played a crucial part in the early career of Elvis. The two first met in 1955 when he was working with Sun Records, and she was working in PR for Colonel Parker.

After she taped a radio interview with Elvis in July 1955 in Jacksonville, she found him a place on a bill headlined by Hank Snow, and in October 1955 showed him the song Heartbreak Hotel, which she had written with Tommy Durden, a Jacksonville singer-songwriter.

Elvis loved it and recorded it in January 1956 as his first single for new label RCA Victor. The rest is history.

These lyrics, which come with a letter of authenticity from James Spence Authentication, include various edits and corrections, settling on the words that would become those of the classic hit song.
