Dresses worn by Princesses Diana and Grace tripled their estimates at Julien’s

GARDENA, Calif. – Demand for authenticated celebrity-worn fashion continues to grow in today’s market, with numerous lots hitting triple-estimate numbers at Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion, a sale held January 18 at Julien’s Auctions. Royal fashion reigned supreme with one of Princess Diana’s signature Catherine Walker garments taking center stage. Her black silk velvet cocktail dress hammered at $250,000 and sold for $325,000 with buyer’s premium, more than three times its low estimate of $100,000. Diana wore the dress to a private event, and it came with full documentation. Julien’s holds the world record for the most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana: a Jacques Azagury celestial dress that earned $1.1 million in 2023 at its Hollywood Legends auction with TCM.

From Great Britain to Monaco, another iconic royal look made a grand showing. This time it was Princess Grace, the Hollywood Golden Age star and Academy Award-winning actress. Her 1961 Givenchy ensemble worn to the White House with husband Prince Rainier to meet President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy also hammered at $250,000 and sold for $325,000 with buyer’s premium. The ensemble consists of what’s described as a ‘Kelly-green’ wool tweed sleeveless dress with a gathered skirt, an elbow-length sleeved tweed jacket, and a white hat.

The three-tier tutu skirt worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits for HBO’s Sex and the City turned heads once again when it hammered for $40,000 and sold for $52,000 (with buyer’s premium), six and a half times its low estimate of $8,000.

Other Highlights included:

Audrey Hepburn’s 1970 Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche dress, worn to her son’s christening, met its high estimate, hammering for $10,000 and selling for $13,000 with buyer’s premium.

Whitney Houston’s Burberry London cotton trench coat with metallic gold coating, worn at her Mawazine Music Festival performance in Morocco in 2008, hammered for $3,500 and sold for $4,550.

“This showstopping collection of exquisite garments adorned on the royals, Princess Diana and Princess Grace of Monaco and the streetwear-style tutu worn on Hollywood icon Sarah Jessica Parker that made fashion statements at the time of their appearances are now a part of auction history,” said Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions. “Today’s auction’s results amplify the value and collectability of these fashion looks that became some of the most iconic style moments of our time.”

NEW YORK — Held annually, Doyle New York‘s Stage & Screen event features iconic memorabilia, costumes and much more from the realms of Hollywood, Broadway, opera and dance. This year’s edition is scheduled for Friday, December 15, and portions of the sale’s proceeds will be donated to the Entertainment Community Fund, the charity formed in 1882 to provide a safety net for professionals in the performing arts across their lifespans. An amazing collection of sketches by famed wardrobe designer Edith Head represent the sale’s most interesting lots. The Academy Award-winning designer had a decades-long career in Hollywood costuming the top actresses of the Golden Age, including Audrey Hepburn in her Academy Award-winning turn in 1953’s Roman Holiday. Head’s silver brocade dress appears in the opening scene of the film, when the princess is shown in newsreels greeting and dancing with dignitaries at an official reception. Head would win her fifth Academy Award for her work on the film (she would ultimately earn eight during her lifetime). The illustration is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

Fans of the legendary rock band Queen will thrill to this hand-written letter and portrait sketch by Freddie Mercury. Sent to his bandmate Mick ‘Miffer’ Smith of Mercury’s first group, Ibex, the 1969 letter is a dazzling look into Mercury’s experiences at the time, and the illustration reveals the showman’s hidden talents as a fine illustrator. The lot is estimated at $12,000-$18,000.

An Anderson & Sheppard fuchsia pink double-breasted velvet tuxedo blazer worn by Daniel Craig to the premiere of No Time To Die is a must-have for fans of the modern James Bond franchise. Craig donned the blazer for the London Royal Albert Hall premiere of the film on September 28, 2021, and the lot is accompanied by a press photograph of him wearing it. In addition, the blazer’s inside lining features Daniel Craig’s signature on the left side. No Time To Die was Daniel Craig’s fifth and final turn as James Bond. The brightly colored garment is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

VIENNA — Vintage cameras and photography are burgeoning areas in today’s collectors market, with an ever-increasing demand for vintage hardware and the images produced by them. Leitz Photographica returns for a two-day fall event on Friday, November 24 (Photographs: Shaping Visions) and Saturday, November 25 (Camera Auction) with an outstanding selection of rare and unusual photographic hardware, plus a collection of prints from some of the 20th century’s most noted photographers. Spanning the two sessions are consignments from the personal collection of the late Yul Brynner (1920-1985) via his daughter Victoria. Though best remembered as the King of Siam in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I (1951 on stage, 1956 motion picture), the Russian-born actor was also an extremely talented photographer and Leica fan. Both passions are on display in this sale, with artistic prints and incredibly rare cameras from his collection. All Brynner items come with full estate authentication.

The Leicas of Yul Brynner represent not only his passion for photography, but also his connections as a celebrity who also happened to love shooting pictures. Brynner’s Leica Nos. 59 and 60 in black paint represent the pinnacle of Leica rarity, particularly the 60, of which only 141 were ever made, with nearly all going to professional photographers. With lovingly built-up patinas and perfect operational status, both the MP 59 and MP 60 are individually estimated at €600,000-€700,000 ($636,000-$742,000).

A collection of prints from Brynner’s original negatives are also stars of the sale. They include a 1964 color image of Frank Sinatra departing a helicopter with a drink in his hand and a smile on his face (€6,000-€7,000 or $6,360-$7,420); Audrey Hepburn on a Venetian gondola in 1965 (€18,000-€22,000 or $19,080-$23,320); and Debora Kerr on the set of 1957’s The Journey (€2,500-€3,000 or $2,650-$3,180).

Other notable lots include an ex-Leica Museum Telyt 6/80cm lens, the only one known, estimated at €200,000-€300,000 ($212,000-$318,000), and the Leica Astro Rifle camera designed for the World War II-era Luftwaffe (€160,000-€200,000 or $169,600-$212,000).

In addition to these two sales, Leitz Photographica will present a second event on November 14, starting at 1:30 pm Eastern time, titled Truth in Focus – Auction Benefitting CPJ. Presented in conjunction with Leica Camera USA, it features 22 lots of Leica cameras as well as images by Leonard Freed, Deborah Anderson, Brian Bowen Smith, and more. Proceeds will benefit the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an organization that upholds and defends press freedom the world over.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Princess Diana and Dennis Hopper items brought enormous star power to Julien’s Auctions September 6-8, with royalty-worn gowns, art and more delivering for consignors at its Legends: Hollywood and Royalty sale.

Three gowns worn publicly by the late British royal brought staggering sums. Princess Diana’s scarlet metallic jacquard chiffon gown, designed by Bruce Oldfield, was first worn in 1989 and was last seen in 1991 at the London world premiere of Hot Shots starring Charlie Sheen. It hammered at $450,000 ($585,000 with buyer’s premium), topping its estimate of $200,000-$400,000.

Estimated at $100,000-$200,000, a Catherine Walker bi-color gown worn by Princess Diana at a Toronto gala dinner on October 26, 1991, soared to $450,000 ($585,000 with buyer’s premium). Another Catherine Walker gown in ivory silk crepe and black silk velvet, worn by Princess Diana to a private event, hammered at $400,000 ($520,000 with buyer’s premium).

Audrey Hepburn’s screen-worn haute couture evening dress designed by Hubert Givenchy demanded the spotlight, selling for $350,000 ($455,000 with buyer’s premium). The instantly recognizable gown from Blake Edwards’s classic 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s topped its estimate of $200,000-$300,000.

A man of many talents and interests, Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) was at the forefront of the worlds of film and art. An avid painter and collector, Hopper helped the nascent careers of people such as Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha long before their stardom, and artifacts from his estate reflect his long-standing friendships with them.

A collection of items associated with filmmaker and collage artist Wallace Berman (1926-1976) carried a modest estimate of $500-$700, but furious bidding between the floor and internet participants drove the group to $12,500 ($16,250 with buyer’s premium).

A Nudie tuxedo jacket, worn by Hopper to the 42nd Academy Awards where his 1969 film Easy Rider was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, with Jack Nicholson nominated for Best Supporting Actor, sold for $7,500 ($9,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $1,000-$2,000.
