Miller & Miller’s first Canadiana and folk art sale of 2024 runs Feb. 10-11

Maud Lewis, 'Black and White Cat,' estimated at CA$30,000-CA$35,000 ($22,215-$25,920) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada — Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11 mark the first Canadiana and Canadian folk art sales of 2024 for the specialists at Miller & Miller, with high-estimated works from primitive folk artist Maud Lewis once again leading the way. The catalogs are now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Nova Scotia’s Lewis (1903-1970) continues to dominate the Canadian folk art market. Discovered only late in her life, in the mid-1960s, she created thousands of primitive folk-art paintings, using whatever materials she could find, resulting in a beloved, naive style that remains in high demand more than 50 years after her death.

Day 1 features two key Lewis works. Black and White Cat features the subject framed by flowering tulips and budding shrubs. Measuring 12 by 13.75in, the mixed media on beaver board is estimated at CA$30,000-CA$35,000 ($22,215-$25,920).

Lewis would return to similar, often nearly identical subjects throughout her career. Near Lewis’ home in Marshalltown, Sandy Cove in Fall is a serial image that spans three decades, with this example dating to her emergence in the public eye, around 1965-1966. It carries an estimate of CA$25,000-CA$28,000 ($18,515-$20,735).

Day 2 includes an amazing 10 Maud Lewis originals, ranging from modest estimates to jaw-dropping numbers. At the top end of the range are two examples, Gulls at Harbour from the early 1960s, and Two Deer in Winter, dated to 1965-1966. Both are estimated at CA$20,000-CA$25,000 ($14,810-$18,515).

Joe Norris (1924-1926) from Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia, is today considered the ‘dean of Nova Scotia folk art,’ ranking higher than even Maud Lewis in many collectors’ eyes. The Miller & Miller sale on Day 2 includes eight of his originals. Coastal Village with Lighthouse documents Norris’ primitive but highly detailed and geometric style, along with his patterned border treatment found on many of his works. The leading Norris lot in the sale, it carries an estimate of CA$8,000-CA$11,000 ($5,925-$8,145).

Fans of Canadian hooked rugs will find an amazing 34 examples included in the Day 1 lineup. The highest-estimated rug is an 1898 example known as Horse in Paradise by an unknown artist. The hooking on the horse is intentionally clipped, providing a wooly coat for the horse against the spotted floral background. It is estimated at CA$4,000-CA$6,000 ($2,960-$4,440).

NEW HAMBURG, Canada – The colorful world of Canadian Folk Art is on full display at Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. on Saturday, October 14. Established favorites and lesser-known names alike will appear in the 269-lot sale. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The belle of the ball again is, of course, Maud Lewis (1903-1970), the Canadian folk artist whose works have set records at Miller & Miller. Seven of her creations are consigned to the sale, led by The Lobsterman, a 1967 mixed media on Masonite estimated at CA$30,000-CA$40,000, or $22,300-$29,800. Also included is a 1967 four-page handwritten letter from Maud Lewis to John Kinnear, an Ontario painter who supported her by sending her oil paints. The letter, which mentions receiving paints from Kinnear and comes from his estate, is estimated at CA$2,000-CA$3,000 ($1,400-$2,200).

Six works by Joe Norris (1924-1996) feature in the October 14 auction, among them a Victorian side table from the early 20th century that Norris painted in full and topped with a nighttime scene of autumnal trees and birds exploring the newly snow-covered ground. Its estimate is CA$9,000-$CA12,000 ($6,700-$8,900).

Earning maximum Canada points is a circa-2000 painted softwood carving of a Mountie that stands 69in tall. Created by Richard “Lynn” Seaboyer (1936-2018), it has an estimate of CA$1,800-CA$2,300 ($1,300-$1,700).
