Three Maud Lewis works and the Greg Hisey Canadiana collection featured at Miller & Miller April 13

Maud Lewis, 'Cow In Spring Meadow,' estimated at CA$25,000-CA$30,000 ($18,460-$22,150) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada — In response to market demand from collectors, three more Maud Lewis naîve works head to market, along with the Greg Hisey Canadiana collection, on Saturday, April 13 at Miller & Miller. The catalog is now available for review and bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Maud Lewis (1903-1970) continues to see strong market demand as a result of recent Miller & Miller sales. The sale’s three art lots are topped by Cow In Spring Meadow from either late 1965 or 1966. The mixed media on beaver board measures 12 by 14in and is estimated at CA$25,000-CA$30,000 ($18,460-$22,150).

Fans of vintage automata will take note of a Blaise Bontems caged singing bluebird, estimated at CA$9,000-CA$12,000 ($6,645-$8,860). In perfect operating condition, the bird has lifelike actions and sings the realistic warbling for which Bontems was known. A master watchmaker, he turned to mechanical birds but retired in 1881, making this piece from an earlier date.

Dating to the early 1900s, this Dr. Lesure’s Famous Remedies point-of-sale display cabinet features terrific horse artwork and is in remarkable, original condition. It is accompanied by an original sales brochure for the company’s equine medicine line and is estimated at CA$3,500-CA$5,000 ($2,585-$3,690).

Coca-Cola was an early entrant to the nascent Canadian soda market. Before World War II restrictions halted steel production, the soft drink behemoth manufactured this French-language porcelain sign for the Quebec market. Measuring an impressive 4 by 8ft, the sign carries an estimate of CA$3,500-CA$5,000 ($2,585-$3,690).

1929 Whippet roadster was the top Howard Meyer estate lot at Miller and Miller

1929 Whippet Model 96A four-cylinder roadster, which sold for CA$22,000 ($19,990 with buyer’s premium) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada – A 1929 Whippet Model 96A four-cylinder roadster roared away for CA$22,000 ($19,990 with buyer’s premium), a vintage Canadian porcelain sign for White Rose realized CA$15,000 ($18,450 with buyer’s premium), and vintage Schuco toys commanded high prices at Miller & Miller on March 1 and March 2. Complete results can be seen at LiveAuctioneers.

The March 1 toys auction showcased the late Howard Meyer collection, including 180 lots dominated by examples from Schuco. “Condition and rarity reign supreme as the determining factors when it comes to value in toys,” said Justin Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Many of the toys in Howie’s collection were exceptional examples.”

The March 2 sale contained 398 lots of petroliana (gas station collectibles), advertising signs, toys, soda advertising, and model planes. “As the market for quality petroliana and advertising continues to mature, collectors are willing to pay higher and higher prices for top examples,” Miller said.

A 1930s Red Indian Motor Oils single-sided porcelain sign boasted excellent color and gloss and measured 24 by 17in. It sold for CA$12,000 ($10,905 with buyer’s premium).

A Murad Turkish Cigarettes single-sided tin sign, made in the US in the 1900s and featuring a detailed image of a Turkish beauty in colorful attire holding a serving tray with a package of Murad Cigarettes, the whole measuring 39 by 28 ½in, went for CA$10,000 ($9,090 with buyer’s premium).

The top earner of all the toy lots was a 1962 Schuco 6333 Disneyland Alweg-Monorail G-Set, marked ‘Disneyland’ and ‘Schuco’ on all parts, with track, cable, supports, a three-piece model monorail, and its original box and instructions. It brought CA$1,800 ($2,105 with buyer’s premium).

Railroadiana steams to the forefront at Miller and Miller single-owner sale March 23-24

Canadian 1920s Grand Trunk Railway bronze locomotive bell, estimated at CA$2,000-$3,000 ($1,480-$2,220) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada – On Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24, Miller & Miller Auctions will present an Advertising, Railroadiana & Historic Objects auction showcasing the lifetime collection of William Robert Wilson. The catalog is now open for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.

“Bill Wilson curated one of Canada’s best collections of railroadiana to ever hit the market,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. “Nothing was held back, and collectors are stirring. Until now, only his closest friends knew what he had. Bill’s passion was railroad, but any object rich with historical meaning had a place in his collection. Session one on Saturday focuses on breweriana, stoneware, general store signage and unique historic maker’s plaques. Session two features Bill’s railroad spoils. It includes the most extensive collection of locomotive number plates ever offered at a single time. This is a historic, single-collector sale.”

Among the prizes on offer is a brass Canadian National Locomotive Mountain-type number plate, measuring 11 by 16 ¾in and coming from a famous locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930. Bearing the number 6057, it traveled more than 250 miles, from Kamloops in British Columbia to Jasper in Alberta, on a Royal Train Ride in 1939. “Each number plate is unique and is often the only remaining thread of a locomotive’s identity,” said Miller. Included is a copy of Canadian National Magazine, with a cover relevant to the plate. The lot carries an estimate of CA$5,000-$8,000 ($3,700-$5,925).

Worthy of mention is a Canadian Pacific Locomotive number plate, having the number 815, dating to the 1940s, and estimated at CA$2,000-$3,000 ($1,480-$2,220). Featuring a cast-iron frame and brass numbers, it derives from a locomotive that was built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1908 and later repainted. Ultimately scrapped in 1960, it was one of three that powered the special ‘triple-header’ train that chugged from Toronto to Orangeville and back within Ontario, Canada in May 1960.

Also on offer is a 1910s Canadian double-sided porcelain flange sign emblazoned with the words ‘Canadian Northern Express’ on black against a yellow background. Described as ‘rare’, it is estimated at CA$2,000-$3,000 ($1,480-$2,220). Given the same estimate is a Canadian 1920s Grand Trunk Railway bronze locomotive bell, marked ‘GTR’ in the casting on its red-painted hanger.

Completing the highlights is a Canadian double-sided porcelain RCA Victor Globetrotter radio sign from the 1940s, estimated at CA$3,000-$5,000 ($2,220-$3,700). One side shows a pea-sized factory flaw below the left side hanging hole, and there are some scattered minor surface scratches, but competition should be keen for this piece.

Spectacular Schuco toys, petroliana, and advertising headline at Miller and Miller, March 1-2

1950s Schuco tin and plastic Mister Atom juggler, estimated at CA$500-CA$700 ($370-$515) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada – A fine collection of mid-century Schuco toys will be offered at Miller & Miller Auctions on Friday, March 1. The 180 lots devoted to a single German toymaker were part of the remarkable holdings of the late Howard Meyer, a Canadian collector with a discerning eye who died in 2021.

Originally founded in 1912 under the name Spielzeugfirma Schreyer & Co, the Schuco factory assumed its more succinct branding in 1921.

Toys in the Meyer collection begin in this period – there are several of the classic 1920s and 1930s tin and fabric wind-up walking figures, including a duo of Drinking Tyrolians, estimated at CA$200-CA$300 ($150-$220) – but its primary focus is the toys made after the Second World War. It was during this period that Schuco focused production on the international market, with many of its toys marked ‘US Zone Germany’, allowing them to be sold outside of occupied Germany.

This distinctive marking was used well into the 1950s, as evidenced by a tin and plastic Mister Atom juggler that has an estimate of CA$500-CA$700 ($370-$515). Like many pieces in the collection, it is in near mint condition.

Many Schuco toys transitioned to plastic and diecast metal in the 1950s and 1960s. However, its range of lithographed tin vehicles remained hugely popular. More than a dozen motorcycles in the Meyer collection include two boxed examples of the Curvo 1000 from 1950-54, with estimates of CA$400-CA$600 ($295-$445) apiece, and two versions of the late 1940s Motodrill 1006, each estimated at CA$200-CA$300 ($150-$220).

There are also two Disneyland lithographed tin Alweg monorail sets, both in their boxes and never assembled. The circa-1961 version known as the gift set or ‘G-set’ is estimated at CA$500-CA$900 ($370-$665), and the circa-1962 super set, or ‘S-set’, is estimated at CA$500-CA$700 ($370-$515).

Among the top-estimated pieces in the sale are a series of boxed 1960s lithographed tinplate planes from the Elektro line. These were all patterned after the Vickers Viscount Turboprop but featured the livery of different airlines. Examples for Air France, Sabena (Belgian World Airlines), and Hong Kong Airways have estimates of CA$700-CA$900 ($515-$665) each.

The Petroliana & Advertising auction that follows on Saturday, March 2 is much wider in scope. However, toy collectors will doubtless admire a Westway AC 747 cutaway aircraft offered with the original box and tripod stand that is estimated at CA$3,500-CA$5,000 ($2,595-$3,705). British firm Westway pioneered the production of these detailed 1:72 scale models of the Boeing 747 in the 1970s that were sold to various operators for display in company offices. This one has the branding of British Airways.

The March 2 sale is led by full-size vehicle: a 1927 Packard Eight 443 seven-passenger touring car. Packards of this era are renowned for their luxurious finishes and exceptional engineering. For many years this car was on permanent display at the Antique Auto Museum in Niagara Falls, Canada, where it was dubbed ‘the Lindbergh Packard’ and said to have been made for Charles ‘Lucky’ Lindbergh. Hard supporting evidence for this claim remains to be found, but this low mileage, numbers matching car underwent a meticulous restoration in 2005 by Stan Uher of Classic Coachworks in Blenheim, Canada, where it was returned to its original black finish. It carries an estimate of CA$225,000-$250,000 ($166,755-$185,280).

Internet bidding for both online-only sales is available via LiveAuctioneers.

Miller & Miller’s first Canadiana and folk art sale of 2024 runs Feb. 10-11

Maud Lewis, 'Black and White Cat,' estimated at CA$30,000-CA$35,000 ($22,215-$25,920) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada — Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11 mark the first Canadiana and Canadian folk art sales of 2024 for the specialists at Miller & Miller, with high-estimated works from primitive folk artist Maud Lewis once again leading the way. The catalogs are now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Nova Scotia’s Lewis (1903-1970) continues to dominate the Canadian folk art market. Discovered only late in her life, in the mid-1960s, she created thousands of primitive folk-art paintings, using whatever materials she could find, resulting in a beloved, naive style that remains in high demand more than 50 years after her death.

Day 1 features two key Lewis works. Black and White Cat features the subject framed by flowering tulips and budding shrubs. Measuring 12 by 13.75in, the mixed media on beaver board is estimated at CA$30,000-CA$35,000 ($22,215-$25,920).

Lewis would return to similar, often nearly identical subjects throughout her career. Near Lewis’ home in Marshalltown, Sandy Cove in Fall is a serial image that spans three decades, with this example dating to her emergence in the public eye, around 1965-1966. It carries an estimate of CA$25,000-CA$28,000 ($18,515-$20,735).

Day 2 includes an amazing 10 Maud Lewis originals, ranging from modest estimates to jaw-dropping numbers. At the top end of the range are two examples, Gulls at Harbour from the early 1960s, and Two Deer in Winter, dated to 1965-1966. Both are estimated at CA$20,000-CA$25,000 ($14,810-$18,515).

Joe Norris (1924-1926) from Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia, is today considered the ‘dean of Nova Scotia folk art,’ ranking higher than even Maud Lewis in many collectors’ eyes. The Miller & Miller sale on Day 2 includes eight of his originals. Coastal Village with Lighthouse documents Norris’ primitive but highly detailed and geometric style, along with his patterned border treatment found on many of his works. The leading Norris lot in the sale, it carries an estimate of CA$8,000-CA$11,000 ($5,925-$8,145).

Fans of Canadian hooked rugs will find an amazing 34 examples included in the Day 1 lineup. The highest-estimated rug is an 1898 example known as Horse in Paradise by an unknown artist. The hooking on the horse is intentionally clipped, providing a wooly coat for the horse against the spotted floral background. It is estimated at CA$4,000-CA$6,000 ($2,960-$4,440).

Howie Meyer collection rung up big numbers at Miller and Miller

1939 Indian 4 Model 439 motorcycle, which sold for CA$85,000 ($62,710 or $77,130 with buyer’s premium) at Miller & Miller.

NEW HAMBURG, Canada — Canadian mega-collector Howie Meyer’s estate came to market with all manner of Canadian-themed collectibles great and small at Miller & Miller December 9. The results were strong, occasionally surprising and highly indicative of a thriving collector base in Canada and beyond for quality pop culture items. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s biggest surprise was a flip-flop of the two top estimated lots. Anticipated to be the big seller, Meyer’s 1968 Canadian-market Chevrolet Chevelle convertible only managed CA$60,000 ($44,260 or $54,450 with buyer’s premium), not even hitting the low of its CA$80,000-CA$90,000 estimate.

Instead, it was Meyer’s 1939 Indian 4 Model 439 motorcycle that came out on top, zooming past its CA$70,000-CA$75,000 estimate to land at CA$85,000 ($62,710 or $77,130 with buyer’s premium). Bidding started at CA$65,000 and five bids later, it was finished.

Featuring the artwork of the animated The Beatles cartoon series produced in Australia in 1965-67, Williams’ Beat Time pinball machine definitely beat its modest estimate CA$2,000-CA$2,500 with a hammer price of CA$10,000 ($7,370 or $9,075 with buyer’s premium).

Having recovered from the devastation of World War II, Marklin returned to form in the postwar period with a full line of electric trains, steam plants, tin toys, and most notably, construction sets that could be assembled into a million different final outcomes. This Marklin Wunderrad (Wonderwheel) measures 50in in diameter and is powered by a Marklin steam plant (no doubt, sold separately). Created by Marklin as a store display in the 1950s, the wheel retains its original signage and was estimated at only CA$900-CA$1,100. Bidders saw it differently, however, driving the Wonderrad to a CA$4,500 finish ($3,320 or $4,380 with buyer’s premium).

NEW HAMBURG, Canada — Howie Meyer knew the joy of collecting. From cars and motorcycles to vintage toys, advertising and soda pop collectibles, his passions were reflected in every item he owned and loved, with a particular focus on Canadian market goods. His lifetime collection will be offered on Saturday, December 9 at Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. in a online-only sale now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The 383-lot auction features toys, militaria, petroliana, soda advertising, motorcycles, cars and automobilia. “If one word encompasses the late Howie Meyer and his collection, that word would be ‘fun’,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. “This great sale was a lifetime in the making.”

A perfect example of Meyer’s collection was his beloved 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 convertible, built at the Oshawa plant and sold new in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada by R.E. Sculthorpe Ltd. (GM Canada Vintage Vehicles documented). One of only 108 produced for sale in Canada, it carries an estimate of CA$80,000-CA$90,000 ($58,585-$65,900).

Meyer’s 1939 Indian ‘4’ Model 439 motorcycle is another of the sale’s top-estimated lots. Built between 1928 and 1942, the Indian features a 4-cylinder motor and is in untested condition (the engine does turn over). It is estimated at CA$70,000-CA$75,000 ($51,260-$54,920).

Perfect for any game room is this 1967 Williams Beat Time pinball machine featuring unlicensed cartoon caricatures of the Beatles taken from the animated television series. The machine lights, but will require some refurbishment. It is estimated at CA$2,000-CA$2,500 ($1,460-$1,830).

Canadian-market private-label toys always find favor with collectors. This Canadian Oil White Rose tanker truck was marketed in the 1950s by Otaco under the Minnitoys brand. It is estimated at CA$1,200-CA$1,500 ($870-$1,090).

NEW HAMBURG, Canada – The colorful world of Canadian Folk Art is on full display at Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. on Saturday, October 14. Established favorites and lesser-known names alike will appear in the 269-lot sale. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The belle of the ball again is, of course, Maud Lewis (1903-1970), the Canadian folk artist whose works have set records at Miller & Miller. Seven of her creations are consigned to the sale, led by The Lobsterman, a 1967 mixed media on Masonite estimated at CA$30,000-CA$40,000, or $22,300-$29,800. Also included is a 1967 four-page handwritten letter from Maud Lewis to John Kinnear, an Ontario painter who supported her by sending her oil paints. The letter, which mentions receiving paints from Kinnear and comes from his estate, is estimated at CA$2,000-CA$3,000 ($1,400-$2,200).

Six works by Joe Norris (1924-1996) feature in the October 14 auction, among them a Victorian side table from the early 20th century that Norris painted in full and topped with a nighttime scene of autumnal trees and birds exploring the newly snow-covered ground. Its estimate is CA$9,000-$CA12,000 ($6,700-$8,900).

Earning maximum Canada points is a circa-2000 painted softwood carving of a Mountie that stands 69in tall. Created by Richard “Lynn” Seaboyer (1936-2018), it has an estimate of CA$1,800-CA$2,300 ($1,300-$1,700).

NEW HAMBURG, Canada — A recently discovered salt-glazed and cobalt-washed stoneware flask is the top lot in Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.’s Canadiana and Historic Objects sale set for Saturday, October 7. The catalog is now available for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.

Found in British Columbia, the flask features incised floral decorations and stands 9in tall. Marked ‘Wm. Collinson Saint Thomas Canada West,’ it is believed the flask was made for William Collinson (1830-1890), an English immigrant who went on to establish a successful sheepskin business in St. Thomas, Ontario. The item may have been manufactured as a promotional item for his firm. It has an estimate of CA$25,000-CA$35,000 ($18,500-$25,900).

The sale also includes four original works by beloved Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-1970). Living in poverty most of her adult life, Lewis only gained national attention in the mid-1960s for her works, which largely focus on plants and animals.

The top Lewis lot is The Three Black Cats, purchased directly from the artist at her home in Marshalltown, Nova Scotia in the 1960s. Measuring 16in by 9.75in, the colorful painting is much wider than is typical for a Lewis work, making it something of a rarity. It is estimated at CA$25,000-CA$30,000 ($18,500-$22,200).

Glass fruit jars featuring a beaver motif were a common sight in earlier Canadian days. This example has an extremely rare left-facing beaver (most face right) as part of its amber glass construction. It is estimated at CA$12,000-CA$18,000 ($8,800-$13,320).

Vintage portraits of beloved animals are always auction favorites. This handsome illustration of the horse Harry Clay, Jr. was painted “from life in 1894” by J. J. Kenyon of Waterloo County, Ontario. NEW HAMBURG, Canada — A two-day auction covering almost 700 lots takes place Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17 at top-rated Canadian house Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. The catalogs (Day 1, Day 2) are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Miller & Miller specializes in fine quality examples from top collections. Many of the items in the sales reflect Canadian ancestry, often featuring unique domestic brands not well  known in the United States and elsewhere.

Day one focuses on petroliana, advertising and music machines, including an astounding circa-1912 Mills Violino Virtuoso. Mills had previously been known as a manufacturer of gaming machines, which were falling into disfavor with government overseers; the Violino Virtuoso is a fantastic first foray into mechanical music. Drop a coin, and the machine’s mechanism begins to draw a bow over a fine violin while a piano plays in the background. This example has been modified to run on 110 volts and even includes a MIDI interface. It is estimated at CA$30,000-$35,000 ($22,200-$25,900).

The top petroliana lot — other than this survivor-grade (meaning no major restoration) 1955 Ford Crown Victoria — is a 1930s-era double-sided porcelain Greyhound Lines ticket office sign. With some porcelain loss around the mounting holes only, this highly unusual sign carries an estimate of CA$9,000-$12,000 ($6,660-$8,880).

Day two is drawn largely from the collection of Al Bensmiller and features general store advertising, soda advertising and breweriana from the 1890s to the 1970s. An item that the lot notes report was “found in a wall in Armstrong, British Columbia,” the 1910-era Remington double-sided tin sign with a unique animation — a spinning target center that rotates with the breeze. It is estimated at CA$12,000-$15,000 ($8,880-$11,100).

Rarely seen canine subject matter in vintage advertising is always a source of excitement for bidders. This Park Lane Brewery beer tray from the early 1900s is a Canadian market original with very little wear. The estimate is CA$5,500-$7,500 ($4,070-$5,550).

Register now to bid over two exciting days with Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. and LiveAuctioneers.
