MONROVIA, Calif. — John Moran Auctioneers brings another installment of its Traditional Collector auctions to bidders on Tuesday, October 24, featuring numerous lots designed to accent any home at a great value. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The 229-lot sale is wide-ranging in scope and offers bidders of all tastes the opportunity to add to their collections. From Asian art, furniture and textiles; European and American fine art from the 18th to the 20th centuries; sculpture, lighting, clocks, crystal and Persian rugs — there is literally something for every collecting interest.

American folk artist William Matthew Prior (1806-1871) was known for his specialization in portraits, particularly of children. Moran’s sale has a fine example of this in the form of Portrait of Marion L. Wardwell at Age 2, dated to 1853. A 1977 restoration obliterated the artist’s hand-written information on the reverse, but pre-work photographs revealed the important provenance. Wardwell lived from 1851 to 1943. The piece has slight touch-ups but is in otherwise good condition, estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

From the same period in art comes this 19th-century American School portrait of a young girl with flowers. Measuring 30 by 25in, the unsigned oil on canvas has fine craquelure throughout while remaining in good overall condition. It is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

A handsome tall-case clock from Tiffany & Co. featuring Walter H. Durfee tubular bells is another star lot. Deaccessioned from Casa Dorinda, a continuing care retirement community in Santa Barbara, California, the clock stands 8ft in height and is dated to the late 19th century. It carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Impressionist painter Jacques Deveau (b. 1937-) is known for his depictions of beautiful ladies and children. Woman in red dress reading at the beach, an oil on canvas measuring 36 by 24in, is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

MONOROVIA, Calif. — John Moran Auctioneers‘ California Living sale, set for Tuesday, October 10, features fine art, furniture and decorative items designed to “encompass the California aesthetic.” The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Moran notes that the sale is comprised of items priced in the range of “low hundreds to the early thousands,” making this a highly accessible sale for all, including those just beginning their collecting journey.

A sculpture by Bruno Romeda has the highest estimate in the sale. Romeda (1933-2017) was an abstract sculpture designer who favored geometric forms such as circles, squares and triangles, usually in metal. Untitled #13 (Circle Sculpture), from 1986, is fashioned from bronze and stands 46in in height. It is estimated at $8,000-$10,000.

Walter Lamb was a midcentury furniture designer who worked primarily for outdoor furniture titan Brown Jordan. His bronze patio Waikiki lounger is a midcentury classic dating to the late 1940s. This example is just one of four Walter Lamb items in the California Living sale and has an estimate of $1,500-$2,000.

Known best for his period depictions of French life, Victor Gilbert (1847-1933) is also represented in the auction lineup. Rhonde Enfantine is an undated oil on canvas measuring 26 by 19.75in, depicting a young bridal-veiled girl encircled by happy children in a bucolic rural environment. It comes with provenance from 18th- and 19th-century paintings specialist Kurt E. Schon, Ltd. of New Orleans and is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Nothing captures the Californian lifestyle more than depictions of outdoor life. Hank Pitcher (b. 1949-) is a professor at the renowned College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Lifeguard tower with boat on the beach is undated and has some minor wear and tear as detailed in the lot’s notes, but would make a fine addition to any contemporary California art collection. It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

MONROVIA, Calif.— A 1995 original by Raimond Staprans blew past its estimate to achieve what may be a record for the well-known San Francisco Bay Area artist at Moran’s August 29 Art + Design auction.

Billed by the firm as having top lots from prominent collections, institutions and galleries, the sale featured a large number of strongly performing lots from across all collecting categories, with most coming from the realm of fine art.

Raimond Staprans (b. 1926-) immigrated from Latvia to the United States in 1947 and eventually ended up as a student at the University of California, Berkeley, where professors Hans Hofmann and Karl Karsten guided his career. He become a major figure in the burgeoning postwar Bay Area painting movement.

Staprans’ A Study of Down-Rolling Oranges with a Staid Neon Apple, a 42 by 46.75in oil on canvas from Mendenhall Gallery in Pasadena, California, was estimated at $40,000-$60,000. Bidding drove the piece to $190,000 ($247,000 with a 30% buyer’s premium), possibly a record for the artist.

Moran had three Alice Baber (1928-1982) works in the sale. Known for her abstract expressionist creations in oil and watercolor, one lot soared above the rest. The Door to the Gate to the Bridge, a 1975 oil on canvas measuring 34 by 54in, carried an estimate of $50,000-$70,000, ultimately crossing that bridge to a $110,000 hammer ($143,000 with buyer’s premium).

Peter Max has enjoyed a long and legendary career in the world of art, moving through a variety of styles with ease. A 1970 example from the height of his Pop Art phase, Right Now, made $50,000 ($65,000 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $25,000-$35,000.

Furniture design was also well represented, with this 1950s-era Herman Miller Model 420 storage unit by Ray (1912-1988) and Charles Eames (1907-1978) climbing well above the $7,000-$9,000 estimate to hammer at $20,000 ($26,000 with buyer’s premium).

MONROVIA, Calif. — A design study model for what would eventually become the Beethoven monument in Frankfurt, Germany is the top lot in John Moran Auctioneers‘ Traditional Collector sale on Tuesday, September 26. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Georg Kolbe (1877-1947) is considered one of the leading German sculptors of his generation. Unfortunately, many of his works have not survived, owing to wartime bombings, melt-downs for military needs or outright confiscation. Those that still exist are found in institutions such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The 33.25in-tall bronze model of his Beethoven monument depicts Ludwig van Beethoven with two female figures from Roman mythology who represent genius. In 1926, Kolbe was asked by the city of Berlin to create a Beethoven statue. He declined, due to limited availability, but returned to the project after the war. He finished the design but died in 1947, before the final could be cast. The monument was eventually installed in Frankfurt in 1951.

The model in Moran’s sale is stamped “GK I / H. Noack / Berlin” for the foundry, and has provenance to the Leonard Hutton Galleries in New York. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

The Qianlong period of Chinese history covered much of the 18th century and saw a boom in prosperity, power and influence. A pair of flambé porcelain fanghu vases bearing a reign mark for the Qianlong period (1736-1795) features streaked transmutation glazing in blue, violent, maroon and pale green. The 12.5in-tall pair is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

A painting in the style of Pierre Jacques Volaire (1729-1799) is another of the sale’s top lots. A pupil of French landscape painter Claude Joseph Vernet, Volaire also became known for his landscapes and maritime art. 1809 Eruption of Mt. Etna from Castiglione measures 21.5in high by 34.5in wide, appears unsigned and is in overall good condition with minor indications of later touching-up. It is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

MONROVIA, Calif. – On Tuesday, September 19, John Moran Auctioneers will present its first-ever Comics and Pop Culture Memorabilia auction, starting at noon Pacific time. The selection will feature more than 200 lots of comics, figurines, original art, posters and sports memorabilia. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Leading the sports memorabilia choices is an autographed Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers framed jersey signed on January 26, 2000 – exactly 20 years before the day he would die – estimated $8,000-$10,000. It is a framed yellow mesh jersey with Bryant 8 patches on the verso, it is signed in black Sharpie and it bears the Mounted Memories hologram seal.

Another key Kobe Bryant relic on offer is a limited edition signed photo collage, authenticated by The Upper Deck and having a numbered hologram seal. This 12 by 24in poster sports a $5,000-$6,000 estimate.

Chief among the comic book choices is a copy of Incredible Hulk #181 from November 1974, which features the first full appearance of Wolverine. While there were many other characters who debuted during that time, Wolverine is by far the most popular in comics and film. This example of Incredible Hulk #181 has a CGC grade of 7.5 and an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

Other notable comic book offerings include a copy of Fantastic Four #1 signed by Stan Lee and estimated at $6,000-$8,000, and a 1986 preliminary drawing and layout by John Romita Sr. for Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #32. Its estimate is $4,000-$6,000.

A 24-lot collection of Tintin figurines will delight fans of the Belgian cartoon created by Georges Remi under the pen name of Hergé. The standout piece is a 2007 Pixi Tintin figurine scene from the album Les Cigares du Pharaon. The large metal and polychrome resin figurine depicts Tintin riding an elephant, accompanied by other marching figures and scattered flowers and has an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Representing the range of fine art in the September 19 auction is an acrylic and vinyl painting by SHAG (aka Josh Agle, b. 1962-). SHAG is known for his colorful, mid-century-style art. Of the four works in the sale, his Alligator is a likely favorite along with Birds. Both date to 2003 and both carry individual estimates of $2,500-$3,500.

MONROVIA, Calif. — With nearly 500 lots of historic and contemporary American West and Native American artworks and objects, John Moran Auctioneers‘ Art of the American West event on Tuesday, Sept. 12 encompasses all the major collecting disciplines within the genre.

Some of the artists whose works are in the sale include Martin Grelle, Russell Case, and a 28-lot collection of Edward Borein works, which leads the fine art category.

The auction includes nearly 100 examples of pottery from prominent pueblos, along with Navajo textiles, Southwest jewelry and beadwork.

The Chemehuevi are members of the Southern Paiute tribe, and are largely found in southeastern California. John Moran has nine Chemehuevi woven baskets, headed up by this fine example estimated at $800-$1,200.

Alson Skinner Smith (1876-1949) was a noted Impressionist painter who today is largely associated with Pasadena, California, though he spent much time in France after studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. His California Pioneers oil on canvas is a star lot in the sale, and is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

Marjorie Lee Eaton (1901-86) was a multi-disciplinary artist, spanning the worlds of painting and acting. Eaton grew up in art colonies, including the famed Taos location of the 1920s and ’30s, working with Diego Rivera. Though she had hundreds of roles in motion pictures and television series, she is best remembered for having portrayed Emperor Palpatine (though masked and with Clive Revill’s voice dubbed over hers) in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back.

The sale includes two Eaton paintings. Seated girl with books is an oil on canvas measuring 26 by 22in and comes from the private collection of the Saks Fifth Avenue founder’s grandson. It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Also featured is Eaton’s Woman with headscarf and fish. This oil on canvas is the same size as Seated Girl with Books and carries an identical estimate of $4,000-$6,000.

Native American textiles are well represented in the Moran sale. This early to mid-20th-century Navajo Yei pictorial textile, woven from colored wool and featuring 11 Yei dancers, is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

LOS ANGELES — On July 11, John Moran Auctioneers presented its ReDesigned sale, featuring more than 400 lots that reflected a variety of styles, periods, designers and marquee names of the 20th and 21st centuries. Works by legends such as Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Richard Wyatt Jr., Itzchak Tarkay, Shane Guffogg, LeRoy Neiman, Victor Vasarely, Corita Kent, Keith Haring, Harold von Schmidt and Larry Poons represented the art. John Moran’s $1M Modern and Contemporary art sale set several records

LOS ANGELES — On June 13, John Moran Auctioneers presented its bi-annual Modern & Contemporary Fine Art auction to a strong reception that propelled it to a total in excess of $1 million. It was filled with phenomenal works by many important arts of the 20th and 21st centuries and included paintings, prints and multiples, photography and sculpture. Outstanding results were achieved by Alice Baber and Panayiotis “Takis” Vassilakis as well as multiple new world auction records, the highest earned by Ivan Picelj. This sale also featured a capsule collection of works from the estate of the esteemed New York gallerist Howard Wise. Absentee and Internet live bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.
