Chinese Export silver, Thomas Hart Benton, Peter Max share stage at Quinn’s Feb. 23

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Works by Thomas Hart Benton, Paul Reed, sculptor Bill Mack, and Old Lyme Colony Impressionist Will Howe Foote will join European and modern furniture and beautiful objets d’art at Quinn’s Friday, February 23 online Fine & Decorative Arts Auction. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A selection of fine prints is led by a 1955 Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) lithograph titled Running Horses. The print is from an Associated American Artists edition of 75 and is artist-signed in pencil. Its estimate is $6,000-$8,000.

Other noteworthy prints and lithographs run the gamut of genres and individual artistic styles. A circa-1997 Peter Max mixed media and acrylic on paper artwork titled Liberty Head II is signed and estimated at $600-$800, and three 19th-century Frederic S. Remington (1861-1909) cowboy-themed photogravures are entered with individual estimates of $500-$700.

Six lots in the sale represent artworks by Washington DC artist Paul Reed (1919-2015). At the time of his death, Reed was the last living member of the Washington Color School, an art collective that gained national acclaim in the 1960s. Reed’s #21, a 1962 acrylic on canvas depicting green organic shapes in a circle, is signed, dated, and titled on the verso. It is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Two bas-relief bonded-bronze sculptures by Bill Mack (b. 1944-) will be auctioned. One of them, measuring 54in wide, depicts a reclining woman draped glamorously in a bedsheet. Signed at the lower left, it is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

There are three lots of sterling silver from Tiffany & Co., topped by an elegant Model 17880A tea set comprising a teapot, a lidded sugar, and a creamer with tray. Made between 1907 and 1947, the set carries a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.

At the forefront of the Asian Art category is a five-piece Chinese Export sterling silver tea set decorated in high relief with a dragon-and-cloud pattern. The set consists of a hot water kettle on its matching stand with a burner, a teapot, a lidded sugar bowl, and a creamer, each marked ‘STERLING,’ plus a waste bin marked ‘Chun Yin.’ All have dragon and/or pearl-form figural adornments or handles. The lot estimate is $3,000-$5,000.

In addition to Japanese woodblock prints (Hiroshige, Koson, Kimura, et al.), an array of Asian decorative art will be presented, including porcelains and antique netsukes from the Estate of Maybelle Dore, past chairwoman of the International Netsuke Society, Northern California chapter. Among the prominent pieces in the Dore collection is a 19th-century netsuke of Ashinaga and Tenaga with an octopus, which was acquired sometime between the early 1960s and late 1980s. It is signed ‘Tomochika’ and carries an estimate of $3,000-$4,000.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Five unique Polaroid test shots and the Hasselblad camera from Dick Zimmerman’s photo shoot for Michael Jackson’s Thriller LP are the star lots at Blackwell Auctions on Saturday, December 9. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

“The auction would have been outstanding even without the celebrity items, but then the unexpected treasures started arriving just before the consignment cutoff. That suddenly took the auction lineup to the next level,” said Edwin Bailey of Blackwell Auctions.

The Michael Jackson items will all be auctioned individually, and the Polaroid images come with a Dick Zimmerman LOA and photographer’s release conveying ownership of the test photo’s copyright to the winning bidder (note that no personality rights are conveyed). The top lot is the shot that would become the design for the final cover, estimated at $10,000-$20,000.

Zimmerman’s Hasselblad 500ELX camera, which he used during the 1982 Thriller photo shoot, comes with an LOA from Zimmerman and is estimated at $10,000-$20,000 also.

The Green Berets by Robin Moore, himself a retired member of the elite force, served as a powerful metaphor for the American military during the Vietnam Era. A galley proof of the unpublished book was sent by Moore to John Wayne (1907-1979), who was immediately moved to purchase the film rights. Wayne’s granddaughter Anita Swift has consigned this piece of Duke history with an estimate of $4,000-$8,000.

Peter Max (b. 1937-) appears in the sale with a 2011 mixed media on paper titled 9/11 Tenth Anniversary. Max’s respectful depiction of the New York City skyline includes the Twin Towers and, in the foreground, the Pentagon. Measuring 22½ by 30in, it is signed and personally inscribed on the verso, and is estimated at $3,000-$6,000.

A selection of George Nakashima New chairs has been apportioned into three consecutive auction lots. Two lots (Lot 5, Lot 6) include a pair of dining armchairs estimated at $4,000-$8,000, while a third lot contains four dining side chairs together estimated at $6,000-$12,000. All are signed Nakashima and dated Sept. 27, 1986 beneath the seat.

MONROVIA, Calif.— A 1995 original by Raimond Staprans blew past its estimate to achieve what may be a record for the well-known San Francisco Bay Area artist at Moran’s August 29 Art + Design auction.

Billed by the firm as having top lots from prominent collections, institutions and galleries, the sale featured a large number of strongly performing lots from across all collecting categories, with most coming from the realm of fine art.

Raimond Staprans (b. 1926-) immigrated from Latvia to the United States in 1947 and eventually ended up as a student at the University of California, Berkeley, where professors Hans Hofmann and Karl Karsten guided his career. He become a major figure in the burgeoning postwar Bay Area painting movement.

Staprans’ A Study of Down-Rolling Oranges with a Staid Neon Apple, a 42 by 46.75in oil on canvas from Mendenhall Gallery in Pasadena, California, was estimated at $40,000-$60,000. Bidding drove the piece to $190,000 ($247,000 with a 30% buyer’s premium), possibly a record for the artist.

Moran had three Alice Baber (1928-1982) works in the sale. Known for her abstract expressionist creations in oil and watercolor, one lot soared above the rest. The Door to the Gate to the Bridge, a 1975 oil on canvas measuring 34 by 54in, carried an estimate of $50,000-$70,000, ultimately crossing that bridge to a $110,000 hammer ($143,000 with buyer’s premium).

Peter Max has enjoyed a long and legendary career in the world of art, moving through a variety of styles with ease. A 1970 example from the height of his Pop Art phase, Right Now, made $50,000 ($65,000 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $25,000-$35,000.

Furniture design was also well represented, with this 1950s-era Herman Miller Model 420 storage unit by Ray (1912-1988) and Charles Eames (1907-1978) climbing well above the $7,000-$9,000 estimate to hammer at $20,000 ($26,000 with buyer’s premium).

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – A striking late work by the American abstract painter Gene Davis (1920-1985) leads Quinn’s Friday, September 22 Fine & Decorative Arts Auction. Bidding for the 499-lot online-only event is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Davis, whose body of work reflected a penchant for multicolored vertical lines, was a contributor to the Color Field and Post-Painterly Abstraction movements and a key figure in the Washington Color School in particular. Dating from 1980, the acrylic-on-canvas Totem is appropriately named, as it is as tall as a totem pole, standing 7ft 11in, and slender in stature, at 16in wide. The work is signed, titled and dated on the verso, and depicts the familiar vertical stripes of color which Davis first began to paint in 1958. It carries an estimate of $30,000-$50,000.

Peter Max (born Peter Max Finkelstein) achieved international acclaim for his similarly colorful creations that became synonymous with Sixties psychedelia. His 22in bronze of the Statue of Liberty, dating to 1980 and daubed in paint, comes from a signed and dated edition of 250. This distinctive work is expected to attract a winning bid in the $5,000-$8,000 range.

American, Asian and European art consignments come from a series of prominent northern Virginia estates and collections.

An unsigned English full-length portrait of a Georgian gentleman in opulent red and gold finery standing before a Renaissance urn has an inscription on the stretcher that names the subject as “General Churchill.” The style of hair and dress placed it into the 1750-60s, suggesting the sitter was an immediate descendent of General John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) or his brother Charles Churchill (1656-1714). The painting has an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.
