Neal Auction Company presents its third-annual Vernacular and Outsider Art sale March 14

NEW ORLEANS – Neal Auction‘s third-annual Vernacular & Outsider Art sale on Thursday, March 14 features a who’s-who of self-taught names, often with multiple examples, from the American South. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Alabaman Mose Tolliver (1920-2006) has a dozen works in the sale, both paintings and painted furniture. One of a dozen children born to sharecroppers near Montgomery, Tolliver was disabled by a work-related injury in the late 1960s, so he turned to painting on whatever found materials he had – plywood, masonite, even old furniture. He achieved national recognition in the 1980s, and his works are now part of the Smithsonian’s African American collection. Erotic Scene and Table With Erotic Portraits are both estimated at $600-$800.

Theora Hamblett (1895-1977) of Paris, Mississippi, was discovered by New York gallery owner and collector Betty Parsons, who arranged for one of her works to be introduced at the Museum of Modern Art’s 1955 show of new acquisitions. Hamblett’s use of flat colors and backgrounds is contrasted with her point-based method for animating leaves in the wind, as seen in Soldier with Flag on a Windy Day. Dated 1969, the oil on canvas is a rare Hamblett original to the market, as she willed her entire collection to the University of Mississippi upon her death. The painting is estimated at $15,000-$25,000. A second Hamblett work, Purple Tree with White Dog, was painted two years before her death and carries an estimate of $7,000-$10,000.

Almost as much a local attraction as Bourbon Street itself, Robert ‘Dr. Bob’ Schaffer operates a studio dubbed Dr. Bob’s Folk Art, where visitors often drop by to view examples of his work. He is best known for his Be Nice or Leave painted signs, as well as images of birds and alligators. Monumental Alligator measures 46.325 by 95.25in and is painted on recycled ceiling tin from Battier’s Pharmacy in Memphis, Tennessee. The lot is estimated at $5,000-$8,000.

Rounding out the offerings from big names in the auction lineup is Clementine Hunter (1889-1998), who has five works represented in the sale. Wake is an oil on canvas board, estimated at $4,000-$6,000, which has been authenticated by Clementine Hunter expert Tom Whitehead. The sale also has six works by Purvis Young (1943-2010), with Horse the top contender at $1,800-$2,500.

NEW ORLEANS — Neal Auction Company returns Wednesday, November 15, Thursday, November 16 and Friday, November 17 with a massive 750-plus lot sale. The event features a number of prominent collections and estates packed with 18th- and 19th-century furniture, decorative arts, fine art, sculpture, paintings, silver, carpets, Asian ceramics and paintings, maps and historical documents. The catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3).

Faux naïf painter Andrew LaMar Hopkins (b. 1977-) is a Creole-inspired artist whose works continue to gain in popularity. His depictions of free Creoles in 19th-century New Orleans are of particular note, along with his portraits. New Orleans Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau #2 is from 2017, is an acrylic on canvas board, and is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Marie Louise Marthe de Blanc, a portrait by Etienne Constant Carlin (1808-1869), has an interesting backstory. Carlin was French and traveled to America, being most active in Louisiana in the 1850-1855 period. The sitter in this portrait was born in 1777 and was the daughter of the French commandant of Natchitoches in northwest Louisiana. By the time Carlin was commissioned to paint the portrait in 1852, Marie Louise Marthe was an elderly woman. The lot carries an estimate of $5,000-$8,000.

Anthony Hay (circa-1700-1775) was a Williamsburg, Virginia-based furniture maker whose works are considered masterpieces of the period. Neal’s auction notes say that furniture historian Wallace Gussler states there were “six notable china tables” from Hay in his authoritative work, The Tea Tables of Eastern Virginia. This circa-1760-1775 American Chippendale mahogany China table made in the Tidewater Region of Eastern Virginia is considered to be the seventh example based on the body of Hay’s work. As such, it is estimated at $50,000-$100,000.

Neal’s sale also features four originals by Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-1965). Born in New Orleans to an artistic mother, all three Anderson boys would go on to successful careers in art, with Walter’s older brother Peter becoming a noted ceramicist and his younger sibling Mac becoming a fellow painter. Much of Anderson’s work was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, making examples in the market more precious. Trees is a watercolor and graphite on paper, and carries an estimate of $7,000-$10,000.

NEW ORLEANS — With her art collection dispersed through recent auction activity at Sotheby’s, Freeman’s and Toomey & Co., it’s now time for the late Angela Gross Folk’s silver collection to come to market. Neal Auction Company will have the honor when 143 lots of silver, sourced globally but with an American emphasis, go on the block Thursday, November 9. The sale is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Neal’s auction notes make an interesting point when they say items from the Gross Folk collection “illustrate the evolution of styles and forms, as well as the significance of silver and its role in material culture.” Indeed, the eight tea services up for bid “speak to the importance of the service of tea in the social life of times past.”

As an example, this Charters Cann & Dunn tea service dating to circa 1848-1854 features a unique design in which each piece is in the form of an acorn. The service was purchased by Gross Folk in 1980 and subsequently was exhibited at a number of prominent silver retrospectives. It carries an estimate of $12,000-$18,000.

A pair of sterling silver cups and covers by Hester Bateman (1708-1794) are dated 1784. Bateman was a prominent silversmith in the 18th century, and a rare example of a woman working in the trade. The cups feature a herald and are inscribed NEC ASPER TERRENT (“Frightened by No Difficulties”). The pair is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

Ball, Black & Co. was a prominent retailer in New York City from 1851 to 1874. Its Broadway flagship location was a destination for the well-heeled as well as the average window shopper. This magnificent soup tureen features cast stag heads as handles and a full-bodied stag figure as the dome cover handle. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

NEW ORLEANS — It’s a study in contrast as an original George Rodrigue acrylic on canvas from his famed Blue Dog series and an earlier Doc Moses, Cajun Traiteur oil on canvas, dating to 1974, come to the market for the first time in Neal Auction Company’s Premier Collections event on Thursday, September 7, and Friday, September 8.

Big Stop Sign, dating to 2002, is one of the beloved Blue Dog acrylics painted by the Louisiana artist. It was acquired from the artist by the Roland Begneaud family collection of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Doc Moses, Cajun Traiteur, from 1974, is part of Rodrigue’s study in Cajun culture. It, too, comes from the Roland Begneaud family collection and is also a first-to-market offering.

Rodrigue is well known for his artistic collaborations with major brands such as Xerox, Neiman Marcus, Absolut and the New Orleans Jazz Fest. After this period, he began his exploration of abstraction with hard edges, patterns, flat planes of color and shapes.

“In Big Stop Sign from 2002, Rodrigue stops the viewer in their tracks with saturated, primary colors, and shapes defined by those colors, that highlight the Blue Dog and connect it to the canvas,” state the lot notes from Neal Auction Company. “The static image is enlivened by the highly contrasting hues, vibrating with energy and further solidifying the Blue Dog as a graphic icon as equally familiar as the ubiquitous stop sign.”

“One of George Rodrigue’s most captivating and memorable early works, Doc Moses, Cajun Traiteur, depicts a unique and fascinating element of Cajun life,” according to the Neal Auction Company lot notes, which also explain that “A traiteur is a traditional Cajun faith healer with an inherited gift for healing, and traiteur is the Cajun French word for ‘treater.’ Some traiteurs treat any ailment, while others specialize.”
