WOODBURY, Conn. — Having spent his entire career in the art world, running some of the country’s most important museums and collections, Tom Armstrong (1932-2011) amassed an amazing collection of art from across the creative spectrum. With his beloved wife Whitney (better known to all as Bunty) having passed in 2022, the family has decided to return the Armstrong collection to the market via Schwenke Auctioneers on Tuesday, February 13. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Armstrong’s resume reads like a who’s-who of the American art establishment intelligentsia. At the time of his passing in 2011, he was director emeritus of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Andy Warhol Museum. He was also a board member of the New York School of Interior Design.

A prime example of Armstrong’s insider status can be found in this Alexander Calder (1898-1976) wire sculpture of both an elephant and bow tie, depending on the viewing angle. Calder gave it to Armstrong in appreciation for the latter’s retrospective on the artist’s career mounted at The Whitney Museum of American Art in 1976. The highly personal gift is estimated at $20,000-$30,000, and Schwenke has applied for registration of the piece with the Calder Foundation.

The Armstrongs were clear fans of ceramicist Betty Woodman (b. 1930-). Her Mewar Memories triptych is comprised of three earthenware vessels, and carries an estimate of $40,000-$50,000.

Andrew Masullo (b. 1957-) is a modern abstract artist who has said he uses a numbering system for his work titles so that viewers won’t be tempted to interpret what any given painting might “mean.” The Armstrongs purchased 3330, an oil on canvas with a multitude of small ovals and circles, from Washburn Gallery in New York. It is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

The Armstrongs collected many bronzes, with one particular example worthy of further examination: Galapagos Penguin, a 1932 bronze by James Lippitt Clark (1883-1969). Clark was an artist working primarily in bronze, but also served as curator of arts and a taxidermist at the American Museum of Natural History, part of the Smithsonian Institution. Working there would have given him access to taxidermied penguins from which to fashion his bronze. The 9.5in penguin is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

WOODBURY, Conn. – A silver and turquoise tazza designed by Danish silversmith Erik Magnussen (1884-1961) for the Gorham Manufacturing Company sold for $24,000 ($30,960 with buyer’s premium) at Schwenke Auctioneers on December 12.

Magnussen worked for Gorham as artistic director for only a short time just before the Depression after emigrating to the U.S. in 1925. This 75oz footed bowl, marked Gorham alongside Magnussen’s monogram, assumes a hand-hammered 16in petal form supported by a cylindrical base and four spherical feet of turquoise. A marriage of Danish Arts and Crafts and the Art Deco style, it is typical of the innovative mixed-media designs that helped reinvigorate Gorham’s domestic silver line in the late 1920s, but ultimately sold poorly. This piece, part of a group of silver items from a New England educational institution – it had a scratched accession date of 09/27/89 to the base – is one of only a handful of examples of its type. The estimate was $3,000-$5,000.

After disappointing sales, Magnussen left Gorham shortly before the Wall Street crash in 1929 to work for the New York branch of the German firm August Dingeldein & Sohn. In 1932 he set up on his own, working first in Chicago and then in Los Angeles.

Some of the best lots in the sale came from the estate of Theodora Gibson Berg of New Canaan, Connecticut. They included a platinum, diamond, ruby and pearl necklace that – although unsigned – came in a fitted case labeled for Frank Walter Lawrence Inc. of Fifth Avenue, New York.

Lawrence (1864-1929) is best known for his contribution to the Arts and Crafts movement and turn of the century jewels inspired by history, color, and design rather than great intrinsic value (period newspapers credit him with pioneering jewelry featuring baroque pearls found in the Mississippi River). However, this necklace, with its pavé-set bows and diamond florettes, was likely made after 1913, when Lawrence and two of his cousins incorporated the firm. His cousins continued to run the business until 1975. The necklace hammered for $29,000 ($37,410 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $15,000-$20,000.

Among the furniture lots was a 3ft 9in Spanish domed coffer with elaborate tracery carving and wrought iron strap-work bindings. A good example of a type popular in the 17th century, it was estimated at $400-$600 but hammered for $15,000 ($19,350 with buyer’s premium).
