Getty collection bidders snapped up everything and the washroom sink at Stair

Doulton & Co stoneware sink, shelf, and soap dishes, which sold for $33,280 at Stair Galleries.

HUDSON, N.Y. – For those who had not yet drunk their fill of the Ann and Gordon Getty collection, there was a chance to imbibe once last time on March 1. A day later than planned, Stair Galleries sold the final 340 lots under the poetic title A Confluence of 19th and 20th Century Design. Results can be seen at LiveAuctioneers.

Following a three-day auction in upstate New York in January, the primary focus of this last hurrah was the Aesthetic movement, Gothic Revival, and Arts and Crafts works that Ann Getty bought in the 1990s to furnish a Greco-Roman style estate in Berkeley Hills called Temple of Wings. Under her stewardship, the historic house held a microcosm of late 19th-century taste: lighting and glass from Tiffany Studios, pewter by Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co., and ceramics by William De Morgan.

This may have been the material that didn’t quite make the cut when Christie’s held its $19 million Temple of Wings sale back in June 2023, but there was plenty in the March 1 sale to whet the appetite, with estimates set in the distinctly affordable range. While many items included provenances to auctions and dealerships in London and New York, estimates started at $50 and peaked at $5,000.

Of course, bidding passed these modest numbers on many occasions. Sets of tiles by De Morgan were as popular at Stair as they had been in New York eight months ago. A lot comprising 35 6in square Sands End period tiles in the design known as Blue Bedford Daisy Cornflower hammered for $21,000 ($26,800 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $1,500-$3,000, while a lot of 58 New Persian No. 2 pattern Sands End tiles (40 of them complete) hammered for $19,000 ($24,320 with buyer’s premium) against $1,200-$1,800.

Equally certain to generate plenty of interest at estimates way below the norm were a series of wares from Tiffany Studios. A patinated bronze Nautilus lamp, for which bidding had already reached three times the $2,000-$3,000 estimate before sale day, took $18,000 ($23,040 with buyer’s premium), while $21,000 ($26,800 with buyer’s premium) was bid against the same estimate for a 10in favrile glass vase worked with an iridescent pulled peacock feather design. The peacock was one of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s favorite decorative motifs; he unveiled his first vases at the company’s Fourth Avenue showrooms in the early spring of 1897.

The sale included 18 works by the Glasgow School painter, etcher, and illustrator Annie French (1872-1965). In 1909, she succeeded Jessie M. King as tutor in ceramic decoration at the Applied Art Studios of Glasgow School, although following her marriage to etcher and stained-glass artist George Wooliscroft Rhead in 1914, she moved to London and then to the island of Jersey. At 10 by 16in (26 by 41cm), the 1920s ink and watercolor painting on vellum titled Dreaming was a relatively large work and an appealing fairy tale subject – a maiden seated upon a carpet of brightly colored flowers lit by the night sky. Estimated at $2,000-$3,000, it took $10,000 ($12,280 with buyer’s premium) from a LiveAuctioneers bidder.

Markedly outpacing its estimate was an Irish Arts and Crafts embroidered panel by Lily Yeats that hammered for $6,000 ($7,680 with buyer’s premium) against $700-$900. The sibling of William Butler and Jack Bulter Yeats, Susan Mary Yeats (1866-1949), known as Lily, trained under May Morris – she called her employer ‘the Gorgon’ – before running embroidery departments at the Dun Emer craft studio near Dublin and at Cuala Industries at nearby Churchtown, Ireland. This 10 by 14in (25 by 35cm) panel dated to circa 1900 had a label sewn to the reverse reading ‘Embroidery Picture by sister of poet Yeats, Wedding present from Mary Geoffrey Holt (cousin of Yeats)’. It had been bought at Christies in October 1998 for £1,495 (roughly $1,910).

Alexander Fisher (1864-1936) is best known as the key figure in the revival of enameling in Britain, but he, too, worked in textiles. He designed his Rose Tree hangings for the refurbishment of Fanhams Hall in Ware, Hertfordshire, England. Eight panels were worked by the Royal School of Art Needlework circa 1904 and remained at the house until its contents were auctioned in 1950. Included in the Getty sale was a large embroidered silk damask hanging to this design, measuring more than 10ft by 4ft 8in (3m by 1.2m 20cm). It was given a nominal estimate of just $250-$450 and sold at $5,500 ($7,040 with buyer’s premium). A similar panel sold for £24,000 (roughly $30,700) at Christie’s in 2006.

Estimated at $1,500-$3,000 but sold at $5,500 ($7,040 with buyer’s premium) was a pair of reformed Gothic brass and enamel vases to a design by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852), architect of the Palace of Westminster and its renowned clock tower, the Elizabeth Tower. Although unmarked, they were made by John Hardman & Co., the Birmingham firm that enjoyed a close relationship with Pugin from the 1840s. Bought from London dealership H. Blairman & Sons in 1996, this is one of just a handful of pairs known, including one previously owned by Sir Stuart Knill, cousin of Pugin’s third wife Jane Knill.

The unexpected highpoint of the sale was provided by a Doulton & Co stoneware washroom sink with matching shelf and soap dishes. Probably dating to the first quarter of the 20th century, the various elements shared a geometric pattern and a mottled blue ground of the type more commonly seen on Lambeth vases and bowls. According to the catalog, Getty had bought it from dealer Miles Hoole and the Great Antiques Fair held at Earls Court, London in 1998. A total of 105 bidders were watching it on LiveAuctioneers as it passed its estimate of $600-$800 to make a punchy $26,000 ($33,280 with buyer’s premium).

Ann and Gordon Getty collection enjoys its last hurrah at Stair Feb. 29

Pair of AWN Pugin for John Hardman & Co. enameled brass vases, estimated at $1,500-$3,000 at Stair Galleries.

HUDSON, N.Y. – Still not had enough of the Ann and Gordon Getty collection? There’s a chance for a final bite at the apple when Stair Galleries sells a further 340 lots under the title A Confluence of 19th and 20th Century Design on Thursday, February 29. The catalog is available at LiveAuctioneers.

Following a three-day auction in upstate New York in January, the primary focus of this last hurrah is the Aesthetic movement, Gothic Revival, and Arts and Crafts works that Ann Getty bought in the 1990s to furnish a Greco-Roman-style estate in Berkeley Hills called Temple of Wings. This may be the material that didn’t quite make the cut when Christie’s held its $19 million Temple of Wings auction back in June 2023, but there is plenty here to whet the appetite, with estimates set in the distinctly affordable range. They start at $50 and peak at $6,000-$8,000 for a Tiffany Studios bronze floor lamp with a later shade. Many items include provenances to auctions and dealerships in London and New York.

Highlights include a series of designs for Christmas cards by Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen (1886–1957) that were commissioned by the American card firm Cardoza in the 1950s. The designs on the theme of the Nativity were redrawn by Disney artists in pen and ink and gouache sometime later in the 1950s, with these pastels representing Nielsen’s final American works. Last sold at Sotheby’s in 1996, the five 14 by 10in designs have estimates of $4,000-$8,000 each.

Certain to generate plenty of interest at $1,500-$3,000 is a pair of reformed Gothic brass and enamel vases to a design by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852), architect of the Palace of Westminster and its renowned clock tower, the Elizabeth Tower. Although unmarked, they were made by made by John Hardman & Co, the Birmingham firm that enjoyed a close relationship with Pugin from the 1840s. Bought from London dealership H. These and other items feature in our slide show of 10 items to choose from in the last of the Ann and Gordon Getty sales.

HUDSON, N.Y. – Finding antiques with the wow factor was Ann Getty’s forte, and she did it with great dedication, some good advice, and a formidable bank balance. When Stair Galleries sold more lots from the remarkable Ann and Gordon Getty collection on January 23-25, it meant more of the sumptuous English and European furnishings that made the $200 million-plus series of sales at Christie’s in New York such memorable events. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3).

Colin Stair had known Ann and Gordon Getty personally, having worked with them during his time at Sotheby’s and Stair Restoration. “Ann Getty was patience and taste personified”, he said. “She was, without a doubt, one of America’s greatest self-taught decorators.”

The 726 lots titled A Lifetime of Connoisseurship, Curiosity and Collecting brought together art, furniture, and objects from three California properties that were furnished in what was dubbed the ‘layered maximalism’ style: an Italianate manse in Pacific Heights; her childhood home outside of Sacramento, known as Wheatland; and Temple of Wings, the Greco-Roman-style estate in Berkeley Hills.

Many items included provenances to Sotheby’s and Christie’s auctions in London and New York, bought from the late 1970s into the first decade of the 21st century. However, the difference between this and previous sales were the distinctly affordable estimates. Most entries were estimated under $2,000, and few had reserves.

Two distinctly different carpets led the first day of selling, bringing $20,000 ($25,600 with buyer’s premium) each.

Estimated at $4,000-$6,000 was a late 19th-century Bessarabian carpet of the type produced under late Ottoman rule in the area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. This example, measuring a substantial 9ft 5in by 9ft 7in, had been bought from London specialist dealer C. John in 1993.

Bringing the same sum against a modest estimate of $1,500-$3,000 was an Arts and Crafts rug of a similar date. Made at the Donegal workshop established by Scottish industrialist Alexander Morton in the 1890s, the design is probably one made by family member Gavin Morton in collaboration with colleague G. K. Robertson. A number of similar carpets formed part of Christie’s sale of selected contents from Temple of Wings that was furnished from the late 19th and early 20th century embracing the Arts & Crafts movement, the Gothic Revival, and the Aesthetic Movement.

The English furniture from the Getty sales has been particularly good. It’s no surprise to learn that the market is not where it once was, but in terms of quality and quantity, the Getty offering amounts to the finest dispersal of its type for a generation.

Among the more academic pieces in this sale was a George IV gilt-metal and scagliola top center table. The choice of materials is unusual and reflects its history: it was probably made for the Scottish Whig Member of Parliament and collector Alexander Murray (d. 1845), who lived at Cally House in the town of Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire. This table is made in a similar way to steel fenders and was probably fashioned by a metalworker rather than a cabinetmaker, harnessing the local expertise available in an industrial center once known as ‘the Glasgow of the South’. It is thought to have been part of the contents of the Cally House auction in 1846, more recently selling at Christie’s in 2003 for £9,500 ($12,035). At Stair, it hammered for $14,000 ($17,920 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

This sale comprised fewer period objects and more 19th- and 20th-century revivalist pieces. Its strength was the ‘just so’ objects such as a Napoleon III-style 4ft 6in settee upholstered in brocade, which hammered for $12,000 and sold for $15,360 with buyer’s premium to a bidder using LiveAuctioneers; and a provincial Italian rococo-style chest of drawers in dusty aquamarine and yellow paint that hammered for $7,000, or $8,960 with buyer’s premium.

Another country house favorite was a Chinese Export six-panel screen decorated in black lacquer and parcel gilt. It had been sold as 18th century when offered by Christie’s in London in June 1986 as part of the property of the Victorian industrialist Viscount Leverhulme. Here undated, it was estimated at $2,500-$5,000 and hammered for $25,000 ($32,000 with buyer’s premium).

Dining at Ann and Gordon Getty’s Californian residences could seldom have been dull. Guests were treated to a sense of the theatrical with the choice of countless Tiffany and Limoges porcelain dinner services, flatware from Christofle electroplate to Delarboulas stainless steel and pink acrylic, and seating styles from William Kent to Craig Nutt.

The dinner party conversation piece par excellence was an early 20th-century painted wood and antler chandelier in the form of a mermaid. Made in the Swiss region of Brienz known for its wood carving shops (traditionally called Black Forest furniture) it measured an impressive 4ft 1in across. Bought by Ann Getty from the San Francisco dealership Gaylord Antiques in 1996, it hammered for $13,000 ($16,640 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $700-$900.

Similarly estimated was a pair of circa-1930 painted metal, shell, and faux coral wall sconces by uber-fashionable French designer-decorator Bolette Natanson (d. 1936). Typical of her love of under-the-sea fauna and surrealism, these went to a LiveAuctioneers bidder at $14,000 ($17,920 with buyer’s premium).

Even Santa Claus made a belated appearance on the final day, arriving behind the wheel of a Tipp & Co. clockwork roadster. Dated circa 1928, this Nuremburg lithographed tin toy profusely decorated with images of toys, teddies, and colorful balloons carries a revolving Christmas feather tree on its trunk. Given that another in better condition had sold for $25,000 at Bertoia Auctions in September 2012, it was perhaps no great surprise to see this one roll past its estimate to bring $11,000 ($14,080 with buyer’s premium).

A final Getty sale at Stair, titled A Confluence of 19th and 20th Century Design, is scheduled for Thursday, February 29. The proceeds of all the sales benefit the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation for the Arts.

HUDSON, N.Y. – Spotted in a regular Thursday Morning at Stair sale, a trio of French Empire gilt bronzes by Martin-Guillaume Biennais, Napoleon’s goldsmith, sold far above expectations on January 15. After just six bids, they hammered for $40,000 ($51,200 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $800-$1,200.

Stair Galleries’ cataloging was brief but, as indicted by the engraved signatures to the bases reading Biennais Orfre de LL. MM. Imp. et Roi a Paris (Biennais, goldsmith to their Imperial and Royal Majesties in Paris), these were made in the workshop of the Imperial goldsmith and bronzier Martin-Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843). He took advantage of the abolition of the guild system during the Revolution to build a business ‘at the sign of the Singe Violet’ in Paris that at its Napoleonic peak employed some 200 craftsmen making luxury goods of all kinds.

Although offered as a garniture, the models are part of set of 28 different ormolu busts known as the Napoleonides. Made circa 1808-1810, each features a different member of the Napoleonic family raised on a crested square section or cylindrical plinth. They may have been made as diplomatic gifts and distributed in the territories where Napoleon – the ultimate nepotist – had given his family positions of great power.

The two persons depicted here are Napoleon himself (seen to the right) and his youngest brother Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860), king of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813, whose head and shoulders top both the plinth to the left and the clock case.

Busts from the Biennais Napoleonides series make occasional saleroom appearances, most frequently in France, where they can sell for upwards of €10,000 (about $10,500) depending on subject matter. Some of the models are known in only small numbers. Only six depictions of Caroline Bonaparte, queen of Naples, are recorded, one of which sold at Ivoire in Paris in January 2022 for €40,000 (about $43,500).

The 12in (30cm) clock case, with movement by Henri Fort of Paris, is particularly scarce. No other examples have been offered in recent memory, although another with the bust of Pauline Bonaparte, Princess Borghese, is in the collection of the Fondation Napoléon in Paris.

HUDSON, N.Y. – Stair Galleries will present the remainder of the remarkable Ann and Gordon Getty collection in two forthcoming sales. A three-day auction on Tuesday, January 23, Wednesday, January 24 and Thursday, January 25 titled A Lifetime of Connoisseurship, Curiosity and Collecting will be followed on Thursday, February 29 by a sale called A Confluence of 19th and 20th Century Design.

The January event, now available for live bidding via LiveAuctioneers, brings together property from three California properties that were furnished in her favored ‘layered maximalism’ style by Ann Getty: an Italianate manse in Pacific Heights; Ann Getty’s childhood home outside of Sacramento, known as Wheatland; and Temple of Wings, the Greco-Roman-style estate in Berkeley Hills. Many items include provenances to auctions and dealerships in London and New York.

Essentially, the Stair sales ensure that bidders will be offered more of the English and European furniture and decorative arts – blending academic rigor with a love of the wow factor – that made the first Getty collection sales at Christie’s such memorable events. However, on this occasion, the estimates are in the distinctly affordable range, starting at $50 for a Staffordshire flatback figure of a zebra and peaking at $20,000 for an oil of Moret-sur-Loing by the Canadian American Impressionist Ernest Lawson (1873-1939).

Most of the 726 lots offered in the January 23-25 sale have estimates that are under $2,000. As before, the proceeds of the sales will go to various charities.

Colin Stair, a fourth-generation furniture specialist, knew Ann and Gordon Getty personally. “I was honored to work with the Getty family during my time at both Sotheby’s and Stair Restoration. Everything in the Getty home was done ‘just so,’ and it absolutely rang true in every interior. Ann Getty was patience and taste personified. She was, without a doubt, one of America’s greatest self-taught decorators,” he recalled.
